Game 64-Brooms out for the Tribe

I don’t quite know how to read this series thus far. Either the Indians caught the Yanks at the wrong time, coming off being embarrassed at home by the Red Sox. Or maybe the Yankees caught the Indians at the right time, slumping their way into the stadium losing 6 of 7 before coming to the Bronx. Maybe it’s a little of both. Either way, the results haven’t been pretty for the Tribe, but have been lovely for the boys in pinstripes.
In Yankee news, Russell Martin was a late scratch due to his back stiffening up after he took BP. He’s been slumping with the bat, and now he can’t get on the field. I wouldn’t mind getting a look at Jesus Montero for a few weeks, but that’s just me. For those counting, Derek is at 2993 hits. With 4 games left in this home stand, he’ll need a good night somewhere to get DJ3K at home. If he doesn’t, I personally wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. But it would be nice for the face of the franchise to set this milestone in front of the hometown fans.
Here’s your Yankees lineup, courtesy of LuHud:
1. Derek Jeter SS
2. Curtis Granderson CF
3. Mark Teixiera 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez 3B
5. Robinson Cano 2B
6. Nick Swisher RF
7. Jorge Posada DH
8. Brett Gardner LF
9. Francisco Cervelli C
On the bump is Allen James Burnett. GO YANKS!!!!

I think it’s clear Martin should have been put on the DL yesterday. His back and toe are holding him back at the plate, and behind it. The guy has a history of injuries, we should just DL him now to have him later.
Yeah, just DL him, get him healthy, and let’s take a look at Jesus or Posada back there for a few weeks.
Problem, not a big one, is now we lose the ability to make it retroactive. He may need the full 15, so either way it’s not a huge deal.
Ummm…Derek cost us a run that inning. Should we all yell at him the way we did at Gardner?
I blame Girardi. I’ll find a reason.
I’d say, blame Brantley. He could have chucked him out, he was so shallow. That was the first out, probably smart not to risk it, tho it didn’t look good.
speaking of, Jesus Montero just hit a 3 run home run. He go it off of a Major League player too, Tom Gorzelanny. OK, not a very good Major League player.
Lotsa frustration from the missed opportunities: seemed we could bag this game in the first. Feel like AJ would get a boost and hold the lead, maybe even throw a few changeups. But I’m thinking Carrasco gets tough, rather than our hitters are failing.

Terrific piece by Mike today on Wuertz. Just one thing. Haven’t we all learned by now not to trade for A’s pitchers? You have to understand something about how Beane operates. He doesn’t think long term, doesn’t look to protect arms because he knows by the time they start to break down, they’ll be trade bait and/or too expensive. He likes young arms, he runs them into the ground and trades them when their shelf life is due to expire. Half his staff from this year is on the DL, and Harden, Mulder, Duchscherer, Zito were all pretty much done by the time they left.
I bring this up because Mike details how he throws his slider more than half the time, which is something the Yanks would never allow a young pitcher to do. All of his rate stats are terrific, but all trending the wrong way. I’m sorry, this one looks like another Beane special to me.
Brackman is coming out of the pen tonight, last I heard his turn in the rotation is being skipped this week. I wonder if they are going to move him to the pen in Scranton and see if they can’t get something better out of him. I wouldn’t expect him to do anything in the major leagues, but I guess you never know. In any case he didn’t do well, going 1.1 IP with 3 H, 2 BB, 2 ER.
think I heard his command wa better last year, finally coming out of Tommy John funk. Was he at triple-A, or is this transition time?
He was in triple A last year, he has been god awful in the rotation all year long. In fact he has more BB/9 than he does K/9, 6.75 K/9, 6.92 K/9, an all time high in HRs/9 at 1.04 and a 6.75 ERA, and a 5.85 FIP.
Lanky tall, he would hope to be a very late bloomer. Walks don’t work in the majors, or in relief.
WOO-HOO! I’ve been waiting for this move. The Yanks need bullpen help, and frankly it’s about time to declare Brackman a failed starter. Even during his horrendous 2009 campaign, he had a good stretch at the end of the year working out of the pen. If this goes well, we could see him called up as a reliever in a month or two, and I’m all on board with that.
At this point anything they want to do with Brackman I’m for. His prospect days are almost over, and honestly I just can’t compare the man to Randy Johnson and his learning curve. If he can pitch out of the pen more effectively, so be it.
At some point, we have to give up the ghost. I wasn’t overly impressed by the ‘strides’ he made last year, and then they promoted him. If the clock wasn’t ticking and they didnt have so much invested in him, he might be handled differently. But so far he’s been a bust as a starter, so you have to give this a shot. If this doesn’t work, next step is to release him.
Yeah the people that group him with Betances and Banuelos in anyway are bringing down Banuelos and Betances.
Speaking of Banuelos, his walk rates are off the chart, his main claim to fame has always been control and pitchability. He simply can’t walk 5+ batters per 9 innings. I’m not worried about him longterm, but he needs to have a strong rest of the way in that regard.
Apparently it would kill the Yankees to
(a) Win more than three straight, considering it’s only happened one time all season, and (b) Bother to score runs against a pitcher they’ve never faced before.
For the love of christ, I feel like a broken record, but doesn’t this team employ any advance scouts?
They do, but as they say it’s one thing to read about being kicked by a horse, and quite another to actually have his hooves in your gut.
Regardless of the rest of the evening that was a great game out of Burnett.
yeah, clean, his curves were good. Reading his lips (“f…ing bulls…”), he didn’t want out, either.
So if Jeter misses a few games I assume Girardi goes Gardner, Granderson?
Gardner would sure seem to be tuned up for a run.
Ooh, perfect pitch Perez has got. Cuts the cheese.
This will be a tough game to lose. Easily could’ve been 5-0 early on.
Booooo. Who would have thought Jeter freezing up on a sac fly with bases loaded, nobody out in the 1st inning would have decided the game?
Jeter cost the Yankees a chance to send the game into extra innings with his first inning baserunning gaffe.
He’s washed up and that play is a perfect example of it. Three years ago he would’ve went for home. Now he’s scared to go for home or he knows he’s not fast enough to make it.
The sad thing is he’s so washed up, the Yankees wouldn’t miss his bat or glove if he was put on the 15-day disabled list. If Eduardo Nunez collected the next 100 at-bats by a Yankee SS and collected 25 hits for a .250 clip, would Jeter really hit better? I doubt it. Maybe an extra hit or two. Nunez would probably have more stolen bases and extra basehits, and might even draw more walks. I could see Nunez playing better defense than Jeter with the newfound opportunity to play every day.
