Colon leaves game with strained left hamstring, DL stint likely
Bartolo Colon suffered a strained left hamstring (according to reports) in today’s game against the Cleveland Indians. After firing 6 2/3 shutout innings (and looking like he was capable of going the distance), Colon pulled up lame while covering first base on a ground ball to Mark Teixeira. Colon left the game immediately, and will likely be placed on the disabled list. Colon will likely get an MRI to determine the severity of the strain, but presumably he will be out for a few weeks minimum. Hector Noesi would be a likely bet to fill Colon’s spot in the rotation. It’s unfortunate to have Colon go down while he was pitching so well, but the combination of a cold day, wet field, and large Bartolo may have contributed to this injury. We’ll update as more news comes out.

Assuming Noesi is called up to fill Colon’s spot:
6/12-Garcia
6/13-Burnett
6/14-Sabathia
6/15-Nova
6/16-NOESI
6/17-Garcia
6/18-Burnett
6/19-Sabathia
6/20-Nova
6/21-NOESI (I figure he gets at least two starts)
6/22-Garcia
6/23-DAY OFF
6/24-Burnett
6/25-Sabathia
6/26-Nova
6/27-DAY OFF
6/28-Garcia
6/29-Burnett
6/30-Sabathia
7/1-Nova
7/2-NOESI or TBD
7/3-Garcia
7/4-Burnett
7/5-Sabathia
7/6-Nova
7/7-NOESI or TBD
7/8-Garcia
7/9-Burnett
7/10-Sabathia
7/11-ALL
7/12-STAR
7/13-BREAK
7/14-Garcia
7/15-Sabathia
7/16-Burnett
7/17-Nova
7/18-COLON????
If Colon returned 7/18, that’s 36 days / just over 5 weeks of recuperation starting tomorrow.
It really shouldn’t matter how long Colon is out as I expect the Yankees to acquire a starter or two.
The Yankees need two starters because they cannot count on the rotation after Sabathia including Burnett as well as Burnett has pitched this season outside of games vs. the Red Sox.
Derek Lowe and Gavin Floyd who would fit the bill nicely. Lowe would cost very little as the Braves want to dump his 2012 salary ($15M) and Floyd would cost some but not the farm.
Lowe’s $15M for next year is offset by letting go of Posada ($13.1M cleared) and the absolutely worthless, highest paid AAA starter in MLB history Kei Igawa ($4M cleared.)
I would go to war with Sabathia/Burnett/Floyd/Lowe, Colon, Garcia, or Nova in this year’s postseason.
Also, the Yankees 2012 rotation would be 4/5ths set assuming Sabathia remained a Yankee:
Sabathia/Burnett/Floyd/Lowe in his walk year
It’d be 100% set if Nova had a 2011 good enough to be the fifth starter at least to start 2012 (it’d be his job to lose.)
Correction: Igawa is the highest paid whatever the hell he is in the minors in MLB history.
