Ivan Nova pitches into the 7th, Curtis Granderson seals the game
Ivan Nova gave the Yankees his second consecutive strong start, while the hitters did the rest. Nova gave the Yankees 6.1 innings of work, allowing only two runs on six hits and four walks. Nova wasn’t over powering, but he was effective, giving the Yankees all they needed to pick up the victory. He handed things over to the bullpen, who took care of the rest in text book fashion.
The Yankee offense came via the long ball. Mark Teixeira started things off with a solo shot off Jesse Litsch in the first inning. The big blow came in the fifth. Curtis Granderson deposited a three run-shot in the seats in right center, knocking in Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner. Between Nova and the relievers, that was more than enough for the Bombers to pick up the victory.
Robinson Cano was taken out of the game in the eighth inning. In his post game press conference Joe Girardi said that Cano bruised his palm catching a pick off throw from Nova. He’s day-to-day, so its nothing to worry about.
The Yankees take to the road tomorrow to play a set in Detroit. Bartolo Colon looks to continue his unexpected, dominant start to the season while the Tigers will counter with the often unhittable Justin Verlander. Game time starts at seven.

I wonder what posters think. Verlander’s contract with the Tigers I believe runs through 2014. Next year it goes to $20MM+/- per. Here is my question.
If the Tigers struggles continue this month do poster see the possibility of the Tigers looking to move Verlander at the trade deadline or even at the end of this season to free up salary?
yes..by june the rumors will be in full force..next year posada comes off 13mil..swisher 11mil..marte and igawa 4mil each.. then 2012 mo 15mil and feliciano 4mil..
Verlander is a great pitcher but honestly I think his best season is behind him, he should have plenty of 4-6 WAR seasons but he won’t reach his 2009 8+ WAR season again. Besides that the Tigers have no limit with how they pitch him, and Leyland has used and abused his pitch count over the last few years. I think Verlander is going to break down quicker than expected and fall hard, we aren’t there yet but I don’t want to trade top prospects like Banuelos and Montero believing all of that.
If I’m going all out on a trade like that I want a younger pitcher with a little more grass in front of him, and maybe a little less abuse in his past. One or the other you can live with but I’m not taking the risk on both.
Maybe if we just trade Montero, Betances, and some lesser pieces I’d be willing but I want to keep Banuelos, and I wouldn’t trade Sanchez for him either.
your right on how they whip that horse, same with felix, and look at philly ,it will catch up to doc and lee..the same can be said with CC with clev and the brewers they rode him hard.. we are fortunate to always have a deep pen..just that torre killed some very good arms out of the pen. but if it didn’t cost too much..CC verlander and AJ would be tough to beat in a short series.. what may help is the 20mil plus they unload..tigers are done real early this year.. we have at least 50mil coming off in the next two years..and everyone is dead wood..except mo and he will be 43 at the end..

No way they trade Verlander in 2011 when his contract runs through 2014 or whenever it does. I can’t see them trading him earlier than the final year of his contract if they want to trade him. If he wins it all with them before his contract is up, I could see him being a Tiger for life i.e. lock himself up with them with another contract. He’s basically the A.L. East version of C.C. Sabathia and the A.L. Central version of Felix Hernandez. He, Sabathia, and Hernandez are the only true aces in the A.L. I’ll add Josh Beckett to that list if Beckett has an entire 2011 like his 2011 so far.
I will say this: I’d trade Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, and Montero for Verlander, fuck it. All four wouldn’t pan out and I don’t think even three of the four would pan out and so what if three of them did? You have to give up something to get something. Anyone who thinks two would pan out and that’s bad is an idiot cuz again, you have to give up something to get something and do you want the trade to be 100% good for the Yankees and 0% or 25% bad for the Tigers? That could hurt the Yankees long-term cuz then that’s one less trade partner.
1. Sabathia
2. Verlander
3. Burnett
4. Nova
5. Garcia or Colon (one of them goes to the bullpen)
I’ll take it a step further:
Trade those four for Verlander then stockpile arms to trade for Felix Hernandez in a few years for a Sabathia/Hernandez/Verlander front three.Ideally Hughes is a #3-type #4 and you go cheap or with a kid in the #5.
You do realize there is no way we (or anyone) could ever trade for both right? Either or probably empties the system and Felix would cost more than Justin. To say you could then rebuild a system good enough to grab Felix within 2 years just isn’t realistic, especially if they add a foreign player draft.
There is really next to no chance the Tigers would trade for Montero. They already have Martinez a DH/C, Miguel Cabrera is at first, and they seem to like Avila going forward.
Not really sure how you see both Montero and Banuelos as a bust, at the least Montero should be a decent DH and Banuelos a solid starter/closer. At that point if you even get some of the talent to bubble to the surface with Betances you could have two starters and a middle of the order bat all under team control cheap.
how long is martinez signed for?
He’s signed through 2014.
thanks
My friend, I’d take Lester, Price, Cahill, Jered Weaver and a host of other pitchers over Beckett in a heart beat. Obviously some of those mentioned may never be available I only mention a couple of them in comparison to Beckett. Beckett is about as far removed from a true ace as there can be. An ace is someone the team can go to under any circumstance, one who is consistent and one who can stay off the DL list. Beckett can’t do and hasn’t been any of those things the last 3 or 4 years.
I don’t see the Yankees trading Banuelos under any circumstance, lefties with his upside in Yankee Stadium are to hard to find. As for Montero or Sanchez the only pitcher I see Montero being traded for is King Felix. As for Sanchez he could very well wind up being the catcher of the future for the Yankees in about 3 years. I can see Brackman, Romine and another prospect being part of a package for the right “quality” starting pitcher and that pitcher if he is available could be someone LIKE Verlander or Weaver. Just my opinion.
banuelos ..goes no where..perfect fit for the yanks..i think of all those names he never moves..cash will trade the others for the right ace..#1 type guy only..we have four catchers in the system..no other team has that kind of depth
