After dropping 2 of 3 against the light-hitting Seattle Mariners, the Yankees continue their west coast trip to take on the Oakland A’s.  Bartolo Colon (2-3, 3.77) will oppose the surging Trevor Cahill (6-2, 2.02) in the series opener, and Colon hopes to keep his memorable (pun intended) season going.  Russell Martin has been scratched due to toe soreness, but hopefully he’ll be ok to play tomorrow.

  1. Professor Longnose says:

Three runs in the first inning. The Yankees have already scored more runs than the A’s team ERA.

  2. Good morning, good afternoon, and goodnight to Daric Barton.

    • Steve S. says:

That’s what I love about Colon. He doesn’t nibble one bit. Goes right after hitters and doesn’t give a shit about the result, he just concentrates on making his pitches. Very simple approach, Hughes could learn a lot from him.

      • Professor Longnose says:

You know, it’d be interesting to take a look at “stuff” vs “approach” with the new pitch f/x info. Now that we know just how much breaking pitches break, we could find guys with basically the same stuff and see how different their results are.

  3. Steve S. says:

David Dejesus is a nice player, but batting 3rd?

He’d be a bench player on the Yanks, and the times he played he would be lucky to bat 7th.

  4. Professor Longnose says:

Cervelli steals second. Revenge for all the runners who’ve stolen off him.

  5. Steve S. says:

See Godzilla? That’s in the stands in Yankee stadium.

(Not that Cash had any intention of bringing him back, but still..)

  6. Steve S. says:

Did you guys hear that the Doctor that did Bartolo’s surgery has already heard from 5 or 6 other pitchers, hoping to get the same results?

If that procedure is for real, the run environment in baseball is going to get ridiculous. Young guys are already dominating the sport, if you can resurrect the old guys as well then there’s going to be a lot of good pitchers in the game.

    • Professor Longnose says:

What exactly was Colon cured of? I don’t understand what the procedure did for him, and the articles I’ve read are pretty sketchy.

      • Steve S. says:

Nagging shoulder injuries that made him a shell of the pitcher he was. Shoulders have always been 50-50, if the success rate goes up by even 10-15% that’s huge.

        • Professor Longnose says:

You’re right, if it can make shoulders even somewhat more dependable, it’s huge. But I don’t think we can even begin to guess what the effect could be without knowing what kind of injuries he had and what the mechanism of action for the stem cells was.

        • Steve S. says:

Its not even just the aging MLB vets that have their careers shortened. Think about how many minor league and college pitchers go down with bad shoulders. If 10% come back all the way, plus some older guys, that’s an upgrade of at least 1 pitcher per team. Over time, it could be 2 or 3.

  7. FlyGirlFan says:

Has Coco Crisp been playing baseball for forever, or am I mistaken?

  8. Steve S. says:

Damn, can’t remember the last time Grandy looked that bad at the plate. Really fooled on those breaking balls.

  9. Steve S. says:

Watch Cervelli’s glove. Colon’s control is so good he’s barely moved it all day.

I’m not sure how long he can keep it up, but right now Bartolo’s the second best pitcher on the Yanks. His stuff isn’t quite as good as AJ, but its close. In terms of control, AJ is nowhere near Colon.

    • smurfy says:

The advantage to keeping it simple, with 4 and 2 seamers. Tho, controlling that 2-seamer has to be tricky.

    • Eric Schultz says:

It is a pleasure to watch a guy with a good fastball who can place it where he wants.

    • Professor Longnose says:

Colon’s been terrific, everything the Yankees could have asked, but being better than Burnett, Garcia, and Nova isn’t all that high a bar. Burnett’s ERA+ is 101.

  10. Professor Longnose says:

    I don’t like these hats.

  11. smurfy says:

Wow, did you see how fast Crisp got down to first?

  12. Professor Longnose says:

I demand that the Yankees score a run in the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning.

  13. Eric Schultz says:

    Rough day for Cervelli.

  14. Duh, Innings! says:

So will Girardi take out Colon after 8 or will he leave him in like he should.

I could see Girardi taking out Colon and saying he “wanted to get someone some work” as if this is extended spring training.

Leave Colon alone, Girardi. Your managing might get in the way of the Yankees winning and preserving Mo.

    • Professor Longnose says:

96 pitches? OK, leave him in.

      • Duh, Innings! says:

Yeah, leave him in. I always say the first pitch of an inning could be a one-pitch out. Give Colon the chance to throw that pitch.

Girardi has brought him back out, two outs after a leadoff double, game just about over for the all-pitch no-hit As.

    • smurfy says:

Big double to right center… how long?

aw, it’s a 5 run lead. No sweat, let’s see if he can shut them out.

  15. smurfy says:

Oh, warms my heart to see Swish connect again.

  16. smurfy says:

Wowsa, a good bunt from Brett!

  17. Professor Longnose says:

When he’s running, you can’t look a third. You gotta just gun the ball to first.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

Hey, Rodriguez figured out how much room he has.

  19. Professor Longnose says:

Shut out! Give the brandy and cigars to Colon.

  20. smurfy says:

Cano, Bret, Tex, Swish, lotsa good news along with Bartolo the Bonanza!

  21. Adam B says:

I understand that we are spoiled as yankee fans and not every team has 100 mill to spend on a 1B… But I don’t understand these western teams lineups… How can you produce any semblence of a consistent offense when you have no middle of the lineup power… David Dejesus bats 3rd…

  22. smurfy says:

It may be why they want to move to San Jose, looking for a richer fanbase and a better venue to fill seats. Do you know the way … past the Giants’ objections?
