April MVP/CY
It’s time to play baseball writers, everyone! Get your democracy on and vote for the April Yankees MVP and Cy Young Award winners.
MVP Candidates:
Curtis Granderson: Leads the team in fWAR; hitting the absolute cover off the ball.
Robinson Cano: Despite a complete lack of walks, also hitting the snot out of the horsehide.
Russell Martin: Has payed good defense behind the plate and already eclipsed his 2010 home run total.
Alex Rodriguez: Finally healthy, A-Rod looks like his old self at the plate.
Mark Teixeira: A solid April for the first time in Pinstripes.
Cy Young Candidates:
CC Sabathia: Leads the team in ERA, IP, FIP, WAR…
Bartolo Colon: The most surprising guy this year is close to CC in everything.
Freddy Garcia: Mostly had the results, just not the innings
Mariano Rivera: Career high 9 saves in April, pitching well despite recent “hiccups”
A.J. Burnett: Leading the team in wins (yeah, yeah I know), second in IP.
I think those are pretty fair choices; I may be stretching it a little with Garcia, but I doubt he wins anyway. If I had a vote, it would probably go to Granderson and CC.

I wrote to a group of friends just these same thoughts late last week. I realize that this is truely a small sample and everyone’s experiences can and will be different but for me, this early, MVP and CY Young are not who is having best season but rather, who could the team least likely afford not to have up to this point. They are leading the AL East! From an MVP point of view, the offense is coming from a variety of places but there is no way they are doing as well as they are without the total Russell martin package. he is hitting a good amount but more impressively has been his defense and game calling. Does anyone think that Yankee starters stats are NOT a result of his knowledge behind the plate. I love Jorge but Martin has delivered all year to this point. As for CY Young, CC has been his usual self, AJ has been a very pleasant surprize BUT, Colon has gone above and beyond – first out of the pen, saving Hughes’ bacon and more recently in the starters role. Where would this team have been without this performance? To me, these two guys are early season locks…
Martin and CC, no question.
Obviosly c.c Mvp I would actually go with rodriguez whose resurgence through most of the month had him the most consistent contributor. But really it’s a tossup between c, 3b,2b,cf.
Its hard to choose, I like Granderson at the plate and in the field. But Martin has also been great by the end of the year I think Jeter may surprise everyone.
retire??
Don’t give give up yet.
i love jeter ,he is a forever yankee,,even without 3000 hits..a class act..he gave us a true effort everytime out..and lots of WS wins… but last year and this year, and put the stats on the side for a minute. he looks flat , uninterested..that fire he had i believe is gone…i think his priorities have shifted..
Retire?
Hit two home runs?
Make one fielding play that a young, athletic SS would make?
Ouch. When did this turn into a ‘bag on Jeter’ thread?
(Don’t let the handle fool you. I’m not actually Jeter)
rothchild and long
I like bornwithpinstripes, I think he or she is right on the mark.
thank you ..he would be correct.
