Yankees pick up extra-innings victory, despite Rivera blown save
Mariano Rivera blew consecutive saves for the first time since 2007 after he failed to convert a four out save. Despite the set back, and a 40 minute rain delay in the top of the 11th, the Yankees hung on to pick up a 6-3 win in Baltimore, and improve the team’s record to 12-6.
Freddy Garcia gave the Yankees his second strong start of the season. Garcia allowed only two hits and two walks over the first six innings of the game. The Yankees were leading 3-0 when he left. Joba Chamberlain came on to pitch the seventh and allowed the Orioles back into the ball game, giving up two runs.
With the Yankees leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, David Robertson came on to set things up for Rivera. Robertson struggled in the inning, allowing two hits. In response, Joe Girardi brought Mo in for a rare four out save. Rivera got out of the eighth without a problem, but allowed things to get away from him in the ninth. Brian Roberts doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Adam Jones. The Orioles would have walked off on the hit, except Robert Andino was thrown out at home in a close play.
After a rain delay in the top of the 11th, the Yankees plated three more runs to put the game out of reach for Baltimore. Not even Boone Logan could mess this one up, as the lefty picked up the win.
Curtis Granderson was the hero on the offensive side of the ledger. Granderson slugged his seventh home run of the season, and knocked in three runs on a 3-5 day. After a slow start, Granderson is now hitting .292/.343/.708. For those who are curious, Austin Jackson is hitting .193/.264/.289.
Derek Jeter also had a big game, going 4-6, including his second double of the season. That was the good news for the Captain. The bad news is that two of his hits were infield singles, and the double was just his second extra-base hit of the season. Derek is currently slugging .284.
The Yankees are back at home tomorrow night to face the Chicago White Sox in a 7pm game. A.J. Burnett toes the rubber for the Bombers. Philip Humber is on the stump for Chicago.

Sorry to quibble, but it’s not really the case that Rivera got out of the eighth without a problem. Brett Gardner’s terrific catch saved Rivera from giving up a double that would have driven in at least one run, probably 2 runs. Then there was the play at the plate that saved Rivera in the 9th. One must conclude that Rivera was not at all effective today.
Thanks for the comments David. They’re appreciated.
In a way, you’ve caught us with one of the difficulties of recapping every game for the blog. I was not in a position to write the recap immediately after the game, which is how we do it most of the time. My experience is that my analysis of events is not as strong when there is such a delay.
