The Yanks and Red Sox resume hostilities tonight at Fenway Park. 8:00 start, to be televised on ESPN with Bobby V, Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser calling the action. CC Sabathia goes for the good guys while Josh Beckett starts for the Philistines of Phenway. Fun fact, Beckett has a 6.26 ERA in 22 career starts facing the Yanks. In his past 5 starts facing the Yanks, Josh gave up 29 ER in just 26 IP (10.04 ERA).  CC Sabathia is 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA in his last 7 starts facing the boys from Beantown. Weather could be an issue, with heavy rain forecast to be moving into the Boston area around 7pm. Whether they get this one in or not, use this as your open thread for the evening to discuss whatever you like.

  1. Professor Longnose says:

Top of the first, Beckett threw 20 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning. At that rate, he wouldn’t get past the sixth inning of a perfect game.

  2. Steve S. says:

    Damn, Cano just missed one.

  3. Professor Longnose says:

No gun? ESPN isn’t giving pitch speeds.

  4. Professor Longnose says:

Two on, one out. Time for Gardner and/or Jeter to wake up.

    • bornwithpinstripes says:

this guy never swings, now ahead in the count he swings DP…a high stress inning for beckett gone on one pitch

  5. Professor Longnose says:

    Or maybe some other time.

  6. Professor Longnose says:

If the umpires don’t let that run score, and Sabbathia can get out of it, that could be an incredible break for the Yankees.

  7. This is going to sound weird given the rate at which they’ve been scoring runs, but despite the home run proficiency the Yankees are actually slumping pretty badly on offense.

How much longer until Gardner gets dropped in the lineup? He’s been useless. And don’t get me started on Derek.

    • Professor Longnose says:

It doesn’t sound weird at all. Their OBP isn’t great.

I’d say Gardiner get another 2 months and Jeter gets another 2 years.

  8. Professor Longnose says:

    Sabathia needs a quick inning.

  9. Eric Schultz says:

CC clearly doesn’t have his best stuff today, but he’s battling. Hopefully they can get something going off Beckett.

  10. Steve S. says:

Forget about his results, Jeter looks confused, off balance, and old at the plate. He looks awful, the way players look when they’re done.

  11. Professor Longnose says:

It’s been all Boston for 5 innings, and it’s only 1-0. There’s hope.

  12. Professor Longnose says:

Nice grab by Teixeira. I thought the throw might sail, but it got it done.

  13. Professor Longnose says:

If I understand that stats correctly, in this situation it’s pretty easy to get a meltdown, but not too easy to get a shutdown.

  14. Professor Longnose says:

    (exhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaale)

  15. Steve S. says:

    Nice play by Chavez!

  16. Professor Longnose says:

It’s been all Boston for 6 innings, and it’s only 1-0. There’s hope.

  17. Steve S. says:

    Joba wets the bed.

  18. Professor Longnose says:

    Meltdown.

  19. Eric Schultz says:

I hope Tito takes Beckett out, he’s cruising.

  20. Duh, Innings! says:

The Yankees should put Jeter back at leadoff, Swisher second, Gardner ninth.

    Jeter/Swisher/Teixiera/Rodriguez/Cano/Posada/Granderson/Martin/Gardner

I’d give Jeter ’til June to right his ship and if he doesn’t he should switch places with Granderson.

If Jeter can’t right his ship and is dropped to seventh whenever, he should seriously consider retiring after this year, because if he finishes around his 2010 BA and OBP, does he really want to risk having a third straight shit season in 2012? If he finishes 2011 with .273 BA and .337 OBP, he should be the ultimate honorable player and forfeit the remaining two years of his contract. He’s automatically in the Hall Of Fame once he collects his 3,000th hit. His number will be retired and he’d have a plaque in Monument Park no matter when he retires. Would it shock/stun the baseball world and Yankeeland, and sadden Yankee fans if he retired after this year? Yes, but hey, Jeter is a career .314 BA, .384 OBP hitter – does he want to go out a no power, RBI, SB, defense, .255-.275 BA, ,320-.345 OBP bum 2010-13 with a so-so 2008 which means one great year out of his last six (2009)? That would be very hard to watch. It would also hurt the team. Jeter could also finish below .300 BA for his career if he hits badly enough this year and the next two or three

‘Say Jeter finishes .273 BA and .337 OBP this year. He’s done as the offensive force he was through 2009 and that means he’s done as a viable everyday player but you can’t make him a part time one sharing shortstop. You can’t make him a 3B, LF, or DH either.

Btw this series was a fucking disgrace with exception of Martin, Cano, Sabathia, and Colon, the only Yankees who showed up to it. Good job giving the Red Sox hope and waking them up, Yankees. The only bright spot is the Red Sox could be 2-10 or 3-9 if the Rays take 2 of 3 from them or sweep them, so let’s hope the Rays do either. One of them is losing the series or getting swept. If I’m a Red Sox fan, I would not be cocky over this series win because the Sox are still 2-7 and are facing a Rays team who could erupt at any time. I shut the fuck up and pray the Red Sox get to 4-8 or 5-7. Even then I shut up because I draw Toronto for four there then go to the West Coast for two with Oakland and four with the Angels. If Baltimore still plays well by the time that Red Sox-Angels series is over, they’re no walk in the park. If the Rays wake up and sweep the Red Sox, this game tonight will be a distant memory. 2-10. The Boston Ded Sox, or at least their chances of winning the division this year are dead.

The 5-4 Yankees should be 7-2, sorry. They pissed away two good or better C.C. starts, that has to stop.
