Keeping up with the ex-Yanks-2011 premiere

With a few weeks having passed in the 2011 season, it’s time to take this baby out for another spin. Pretty similar cast of characters from last year, since Brian Cashman had a relatively quiet off season this past year devoid of any blockbuster deals. But I will be adding some guys who made big contributions last year like Kerry Wood and Marcus Thames, as well as some of the more forgettable 2010 Yanks in Javier Vazquez. I’m still debating whether to include Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns and would appreciate some feedback on them.
It was a good week for former Yankees. Melky Cabrera had a game winning walk off single for the Royals on Thursday, his 2nd walk off in as many weeks. Mark Melancon was named the setup man for Closer Brandon Lyon after Wilton Lopez landed on the DL. I also wanted to mention that former Padres GM and Yankee consultant Kevin Towers has had some terrific early returns on his revamped AZ bullpen. After being the worst relief corps in Baseball last year by a wide margin, they currently sport the best ERA in the NL as a group. Hooray for small samples but give Towers some credit, the man knows pitching. LOOGY Phil Coke has been surprisingly good so far as a Tigers starter, pitching to a 2.75 ERA overall. Though he did give up 6 Runs in 3 2/3 IP to Seattle on April 20th. Jose Tabata is off to a fast start with the Pirates, thriving as their leadoff hitter.
The news hasn’t been as good for some other former Yanks. Javier Vazquez has been every bit as bad for the Marlins as he was for the Yanks last year. Johnny Damon has a cracked bone in his ring finger, though is expected to play through it. Austin Jackson is slumping and striking out like crazy, leading some in Detroit to call for him to be removed from the leadoff spot and/or benched, which the Tigers are considering. Personal fave Alfredo Aceves was optioned to Pawtucket by the Red Sox with Matt Albers coming off the DL.

- Most poker sites open to US players also provide online casinos accepting USA players. A good example of this is BetOnline.com, where you can play 3D casino games, bet on sports or play poker from anywhere in the United States.

How about Ross Ohlendorf and Jeff Karstens?
Is there any way to get Aceves back, since Boston isn’t using him and has optioned him twice?
he still has options
No. He wasn’t a Rule 5 guy who was out of options. The Yanks just simply didn’t tender him a contract, so he became a FA. They have no rights to him whatsoever.
I surprised no one has made this comment yet, so I guess I will.
Melky seems to have a knack for getting walk off hits, doesn’t he? He did this a bunch with the Yanks, and now has two in two weeks as a member of the Royals.
There’s a reason for it, and its because he’s not very good. Opposing managers/pitchers will walk the guy in front of Melky to get to him, since they fear him less. This was certainly the case in his time with the Yanks, and looking at the Royals lineup the only guys I might fear less right now would be Kila Ka’aihue or Matt Treanor. Occasionally, the blind squirrel finds his nut and he gets to be a big hero a few times a year. But make no mistake, Melky’s propensity for walk offs is a function of the fact that people feel they can get him out.
