UPDATE, 4:14pm: Apparently Hughes is not heading to AAA, but rather the disabled list with a dead arm (h/t Marc Carig).

Phil Hughes going to scranton-wb. Lance Pendleton getting called up. #yankees

So, that was quick. After three unsuccessful starts, Phil Hughes has been optioned back down to AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre. There is pretty much no possible way to put a positive spin on 2011 for Phil so far, but this is a bit surprising. Considering how much faith they’ve had in Phil for the last few years, I thought he definitely bought himself another start. Good luck in the International League, Phil. I hope you can find that velocity.

Lance Pendleton, a fourth round pick by the Yankees in 2005, has six minor league seasons under his belt (counting 2011). He was a Rule V pick this year, but the Astros retruned him in late March. He’s pitched in 104 G (88 starts) and has decent numbers. His ERA sits at 3.37, he’s got okay control (3.32 BB/9), good strikeout numbers (8.0 K/9), and a great HR rate (0.5 HR/9).

This opens up a spot in the rotation and a spot in the bullpen. If I had to put my money on replacements, I’d say we’ll see Hector Noesi take the rotation spot with Pendleton taking the second long man’s spot. A corresponding 40 man roster move should come soon, and common sense dictates that we’ll see Pedro Feliciano shifted over to the 60-day disabled list. Good luck in the Bronx, Lance. And get well soon, Phil.

  1. Duh, Innings! says:

    1. Trade for Derek Lowe, leave Colon in the pen where he’s best, and stick with Nova.

Sabathia/Lowe/Burnett/Garcia/Nova (enough of this “He’s the #4″ nonsense) where Garcia and Nova battle each other to stay in the rotation.

    2. Offer Andy Pettitte a mil more than what he made last year to come back. The worst he can say is no. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Ideally it’s Sabathia/Lowe/Pettitte/Burnett/Garcia or Nova and Hughes can return to be the fifth starter or reliever.

    3. Tell Sabathia’s agent that if Sabathia opts out, 4 years and a record annual salary for a pitcher of $30M per year which would make him a $189M man up from $161M ($69M he’ll have made 2009-11 + $120M for 2012-15.) That’s an average yearly salary of $27M a year 2009-15, a record average for a pitcher along with record yearly payouts and $120M for 4 years which sets him up for another 4 years and $15-30M depending on how well he pitches 2012-15 when his contract is up. $28M more to Sabathia is worth every penny when what’s the alternative? Burnett and who for 2012??? The Yankees have to be preemptive like they were when Cashman stupidly offered Sabathia the opt-out clause when Sabathia never even thought of an opt-out clause. An opt-out clause in a 7 year $161M contract with the Yankees??? O.k.

    4. Inquire about everyone (duh) and expect to give up at least two top prospects, possibly Montero included for someone. Hughes has zero trade value this year, so forget about him if he comes off the d.l. and returns to the Yankees in whatever capacity. I officially but silently consider trading him in the offseason. Chamberlain, too, if he’s ehhh or so-so. If Hughes, Chamberlain, and Nova are the newest version of Isringhausen, Pulsipher, and Wilson, so be it.

Sabathia/Burnett (who I am not even 50% sold on despite his nice start which he had last year)/?/?/? long-term is not cutting it. Even Lowe added might not cut it.

    5. Hope, no PRAY, there’s a 2005 Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon in Millwood and Silva, or either 2005 guy in either 2011 guy.

Cashman and Girardi should be fired immediately after elimination from the postseason if the 2011 Yankes miss the postseason because two seasons with no postseason and a bad A.L.C.S. is inexcusable. Fuck 2009 which was mainly because Sabathia, Burnett, and Teixiera were signed (bought) and Swisher finally fulfilled his potential. And 2009 is the least Cashman could do 2001-11 (nevermind 2001 and 2003 which they should’ve won one of), Girardi 2008-11.

      1. I wouldn’t trade for Derek Lowe if we had no starters and had to forfeit the season. He is nothing more than at this point than an NL pitcher making a ton of money with stuff that won’t translate well to the AL East.

      2. Even if Andy wanted to come back he would need a couple months just to get in shape and be ready to join the rotation. He has had no spring training and I imagine he hasn’t even thrown a baseball since before then.

      3. Why would Sabathia opt out of a 4 year deal to sign a 4 year deal? In baseball years and total salary mean a hell of a lot more than annual pay because it’s all guaranteed, you may be able to get him to only take 5 years with a 28-30 million a year deal but it isn’t worth it and won’t help the team this season anyway.

      4. How does it make sense to panic and trade Montero for a warm body? I would rather miss the playoffs and hold onto Montero and Banuelos for the future rather than trade them and end up losing in the DS or CS. What does trading Hughes do? Open up yet another hole in a thin rotation? What value at this point does a 7th inning Joba have? I’m sure more than a couple of teams would want to try and turn him back into a starter but they won’t give you more than 7th inning middle reliever value, and that simply isn’t worth it.

“Cashman and Girardi should be fired immediately after elimination from the postseason if the 2011 Yankes miss the postseason”

Wow. Just Wow. I really don’t even know what to say about this one, besides the fact that Hughes dead arm has nothing to do with Girardi or Cashman (unless you wanted to miss the playoffs last year by shutting him down), and the fact that Joe has been a fine manager for us I just don’t know what to say. If you think another Manager will come in and never make a mistake, you’re wrong, and if you think a different GM would never make a bad sign you are also wrong.

Lance went to my high school, he was a year or so ahead of me but it’s good to see a Kingwood boy make it to the Show, and with the Yankees is even better!
