TYA Trivia Open Thread for Tuesday, March 15, 2011
On every weeknight throughout the year, one of the TYA writers will post a trivia question as the nightly open thread. The blog administrators will keep track of the winners, and the commenter with the most correct answers will win a prize that has yet to be decided upon. The answers will be posted in the following evening’s open thread.
Yesterday’s Question: Sergio Mitre will miss his start tonight with an oblique strain. His injury is a reminder that the Yankee rotation is the weakest this year that it has been since 2008. How many different starters won a game for the Bombers that season? How many can you name?
Answer: 19 pitchers, listed below, chronologically by 1st win:
Congratulations to Brads, who named the most players correctly.
Today’s Question: Name the top five Yankees pitchers who accumulated the most fWAR from 1988 through 1992.

Melido Perez, Scott Sanderson,John Candelaria, Chuck Cary, Tommy John
Actually yesterday’s answer is incorrect. The question was how many different starters won a game in 2008. The answer given includes several relievers who did not start a game that year. Included are Mariano, edwar, Veras and phil coke.
I think you only provide the top 1 year totals, not accumulated.
Also that answer is wrong those are all the pitcher that one a game in 2008 the question asked just for the starters which Brads name all of
Good point, and I accept full responsibility. I meant to word the question to ask how many pitchers won a game for the Yankees, not how many starters. Sloppiness on my part. Fortunately, Brads was the winner either way. I’ll be more careful next time.
I think today’s answer is Steve Farr (5.6), Melido Perez (5.4), Lee Guetterman (3.4), Scott Sanderson (3.1) and Chuck Cary (2.6) since it asks for accumulated numbers.
Replace Cary with Cadaret (2.6). I forgot to deduct .1 from Cary.
FINAL JEOPARDY ANSWER (or whatever that show was)
Steve Farr (5.6)
Melido Perez (5.4)
John Habyn (3.9)
Lee Guetterman (3.4)
Scott Sanderson (3.1)
INteresting…I used the Baseball Reference WAR…not Fangraphs–which was the question…(tricky–love it!)
Per Fangraphs, the answer is:
Melido Perez (5.9)
Scott Sanderson (5.2)
John Candelaria (4.1)
Chuck Cary (3.6)
Tommy John (3.5)
Greg Cadaret (3.5)
So Alexander almost had the right answer..except for leaving out Cadaret.
Goes to illustrate the difference between bWAR and fWAR.
To clarify, since there appears to be some confusion, I am indeed looking for cumulative fWAR across those five seasons, not individual seasonal fWAR.
Yep–I think I just nailed it with the correction made.
Damn!! Another correction–John Habyn replaces Cadaret…
