On every weeknight throughout the year, one of the TYA writers will post a trivia question as the nightly open thread. The blog administrators will keep track of the winners, and the commenter with the most correct answers will win a prize that has yet to be decided upon. The answers will be posted in the following evening’s open thread.

Yesterday’s Question:  Tomorrow at 2, the NFL owners may choose to lockout the NFL players and put the 2011 season in jeopardy. How many times has there been a work stoppage in MLB history? Name the years of those stoppages. For extra credit, name the 3 stoppages that actually cost the league regular season games. For extra extra credit, can you tell us how many total games were lost in each stoppage?

Answer: 8 work stoppages: 1972, 1973, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1985, 1990, 1994.

3 stoppages that cost games: 1972, 1981, 1994

Total Games Lost: 1972- 86, 1981- 712, 1994- 938

Today’s Question:  Rickey Henderson leads the Yankees record books with the most stolen bases (326) — at least for the time being (Jeter is second on the list with 310).  Can you name the the Yankee with the less prestigious record of most times caught stealing?

    Is it Babe Ruth?

  2. UYF1950 says:

It’s held by 2 Yankees Babe Ruth and Roy White (117).

    • Matt Warden says:

That is correct, UYF! This question was a bit of a trick because there were two guys tied for first which you obviously figured out! Congrats.

Bexy- I think you also deserve credit for being correct though. Well done!

      The top five list reads:
      1/2. Babe Ruth (117)
      1/2. Roy White (117)
      3. Bob Meusel (102)
      4. Lou Gehrig (101)
      5. Ben Chapman (93)

Since EJ answered my question on who would you trade for Josh Johnson without adding Montero or Banuelos in a deal it got me thinking about what it would take for the guys here at TYA to be OK with trading Montero.

In other words what players would you be OK with trading Montero for either before the start of the season or mid-season?

My list is short and limited to pitchers only Felix Hernandez, Josh Johnson, Ubaldo Jimenez and Clayton Kershaw, outside of that I can’t think of anyone I would with such talent for. Anyone of these 4 pitchers gives us a 1A pitcher for the rotation with ace stuff under the age of 30, Justin Verlander is a possible 5th but I’m not sold on trade Montero for him. It would also give us huge leverage with CC since we would then have an heir apparent to his number 1 role and therefore wouldn’t have to give him anything if he opts out.

Felix is untouchable and I don’t see him being traded this year period.

Josh Johnson is on a Marlins team trying to win but if they are out of it by the deadline they’ll listen.

Ubaldo is in the Felix Hernandez category.

I actually could see a scenario under which the Dodgers trade Kershaw, but not without making out with everything and the kitchen sink, and only if they are so far out by the deadline they can’t see light and even then it’s a stretch of a scenario.

It’s hard to see anyone major ace caliber starter becoming a Yankee and it’s even harder to think of a top end rotational pitcher making it to us without costing Montero or Banuelos we’ll see.

I agree about Felix Hernandez there is no way he gets traded by the Mariners this season, but next year might be a different story when his salary hits $20MM+/-. I like Verlander he’s an AL pitcher and he’s used to being in the think of it. I doubt Kershaw is going anywhere he’s to valuable and to inexpensive for the Dodgers to move him. Johnson is a possibility I would think. I’m not 100% sold on Jimenez after all he did struggle a bit the 2nd half of last year.

      • T.O. Chris says:

Ubaldo throws 200 MPH he’s worth it… The thing with Jimenez is his mechanics, the way he splits his hands and drops his right hand down is a very tricky thing to repeat the same way every time. When he is at his best his hands have to break away and down at the same time, if one starts going before the other he gets off balance and you see him leave balls up and they get hit hard because he throws hard.

When he’s on he has the sickest stuff in baseball with a fastball that legit touches 100, a splitter at 88-90 MPH with a slider, curve and change, not to mention he pitches in the least pitcher friendly enviorment in baseball. I have watched a lot of Jimenez and I wanted us to jump on him 2 years ago before he put it all together because now I don’t think they will ever let him leave.

I agree Felix is more likely to be dealt next year but I have a feeling that won’t happen either, Seattle isn’t the smallest of teams budget wise so they can afford the 20 and if he isn’t worth 20 what player is?
