TYA Trivia Open Thread For 2-21-11
On every weeknight throughout the year, one of the TYA writers will post a trivia question as the nightly open thread. The blog administrators will keep track of the winners, and the commenter with the most correct answers will win a prize that has yet to be decided upon. The answers will be posted in the following evening’s open thread.
Tonight’s question comes from William J., and is in keeping with the theme of the holiday. It is also a fairly difficult one, so good luck to you all:
44 Yankees have shared a surname with a former U.S. President. How many can you name?

- Most poker sites open to US players also provide online casinos accepting USA players. A good example of this is BetOnline.com, where you can play 3D casino games, bet on sports or play poker from anywhere in the United States.

Since Wells is in camp as a special instructor, here’s a fun fact about David.
You know how David was always referred to as a ‘rubber armed’ pitcher? A guy with a bad body who pitched until his mid 40s because of that magic left arm of his?
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/profile.asp?P=David-Wells
He threw 157 innings as a 20 year old and pretty much couldn’t stay healthy for the next 3 years. They even converted him to a reliever by the time he was 24, and didn’t go back to starting full time until he was 30.
Good point. On that note, CC really is one of a kind. I know people like to assume his size will eventually lead to injury, but I dont think we have a parallel to make here. An exceptionally large man with fantastic mechanics. Hard to figure where he goes from here.
My 7 am post is on how both Betances and Banuelos credit surgery with providing a turning point in their development, which is so utterly counter intuitive. We as fans would all think a pitcher getting hurt is bad (and it is) yet both of them said it gave them a chance to take a step back and fix something in their game. This is also one reason why prospects are so hard to draft and develop. There’s no one way to do it. If there was, the process would be much more certain.
Claudell Washington
David Adams (if he counts)
Austin and Reggie Jackson
Brien Taylor (if he counts)
Randy Johnson, Nick Johnson, Jason Johnson, Russ Johnson
Ian Patrick Kennedy
Whitey Ford
That’s all I’ve got
Minor leaguers dont count. Still, that’s 8, a nice start.
Reggie Jackson, Whitey Ford, Randy Johnson, Ian Kennedy, Claudell Washington, Homer Bush…
Another fun fact. Do you know how Nolan Ryan thinks all these spoiled brat pitching prospects nowadays need to stop being babied, and throw more while they’re young to build up their arms?

Actually, Nolan’s career path is almost a perfect facsimile to what proponents of innings limits recommend today. Nolan didn’t really have the harness taken off innings-wise until he was 25 years old. In his case, it was unintentional. He missed time because he was serving in the national guard, and was so wild in his early 20s the Mets made him work out of the bullpen to try to get on track. But it sounds a lot like ‘do as I say, not as I did’ to me.
Cliff Johnson, Charlie Hayes, Enrique Wilson, Otis Nixon…
