Via Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, the Yankees have reached an agreement with Freddy Garcia on a Minor League deal. Garcia marks the third formerly successful Major League pitcher the Yankees have signed to a minor league deal this year, along with Mark Prior and Bartolo Colon.

Like any Minor League deal, it’s hard to argue with this. It does nothing but add depth and give the Yankees insurance for Ivan Nova, Sergio Mitre, and would allow the Yankees to give their pitching prospects more time to get Major League ready in case of an injury or ineffectiveness.

In 2010, Garcia threw 157 innings with the White Sox to a 4.64 ERA with a 4.77 FIP and 4.59 xFIP. He struck out 5.10 per nine, while walking just 2.58. His major problem was giving up 1.32 HR/9; that’s been a theme for Garcia’s career: 1.09 HR/9, though he’s been at 1.3 HR/9 or above in four of the last five years going back to 2006.

Time to throw the Garcia spaghetti against the way and see what sticks.

Finally! The man has been talking about wanting to come to New York for a week now, if anyone is that eager to pitch in the big lights and under heavy media presence (which he specifically mentioned) then you have to give them that chance to back it up.

I’m not much of a betting man but if I had money to put down on who would be the starter leaving camp I’m going to throw my cash down on Garcia unless we manage to also sign Millwood to a minor league deal because he is the one I can see giving Freddy any real competition. Prior was singed to be a reliever, Colon didn’t pitch last year, Mitre was a pen piece and Joba has no opportunity so he should be poised to take off with this thing.

This has been the most un-inspiring off-season that I can recall. None of the Yankee moves juice me.Thisteam is flawed in so many ways.

Such as…? Bullpen is lockdown, lineup is top notch, defense is the best it’s been in years. The rotation is still a bit up in the air, but that’s the only real flaw.

Yeah I really see no way we don’t have a top 3 lineup and bullpen in baseball this season and if AJ bounces back and Hughes stands pat we have a pretty decent 1-3, I admit the back 2 is pretty brutal but Mosely, Mitre, Nova and Javy all started last year and the combo wasn’t very good at all and we still won 95 games with a bullpen that was never this good and depending on Montero and Martin and some comebacks like Teix and Jeter a lineup that isn’t as good as this one.

    Last season

    Jeter
    Swisher
    Teixeira
    Arod
    Cano
    C-Posada
    DH-Thames
    Granderson
    Gardner

    This season

    Jeter
    Swisher
    Teixeira
    Arod
    Cano
    DH-Posada
    Granderson
    C-Martin/Montero
    Gardner

    Last season

    Mariano
    Kerry Wood
    Robertson
    Joba
    Logan
    Mitre

    This season

    Mariano
    Soriano
    Robertson
    Joba
    Feliciano
    Logan

In both cases I’ll take this seasons version which would in fact mean that we upgraded the team this season, just because we didn’t sign a huge overpriced name doesn’t mean we didn’t do something.
