Quick Wish List
I’m currently finishing up a whole heap of schoolwork (yay for the second to last week of classes), so this is going to be a very brief wish list. Christmas, after all, is coming soon. This isn’t the big wish list (Cliff Lee, Andy Pettitte), but a smaller wish list. Tell me in the comments what you think.
1. A cheap LOOGY like Randy Choate.
2. A right handed platoon outfielder like Matt Diaz or Scott Hairston. I wonder if either one of them will get a deal that is more than just for a platoon role. I doubt it, but I think Hairston could since he can handle CF.
3. Bobby Jenks. I discussed this via Twitter with Moshe yesterday, and we both agreed that it was a long shot, since he’ll probably get a shot to close or set up somewhere else. Still, he’s definitely worth looking at since basically everything last year was good, except for a somewhat spiked walk rate. He still struck guys out and still kept the ball in the park. If the Yankees think they have a shot, they should go get this guy.
4. A flier on a starting pitcher. A starting pitcher that once had a lot of potential. A starting pitcher who had a good amount of success on the Major League level before getting trainwrecked by injuries. A starting pitcher who hasn’t pitched since 2006 (though he did pitch one shutout inning in the PCL in 2010), yet is still 16 days younger than our own CC Sabathia. That pitcher is Mark Prior. Am I crazy? Yeah, probably. But it’s the holiday season; now is the time to dream.

If they only get one of Lee or Pettitte, they should use the other money to strengthen the rest of the roster. I’d want Jenks, Martin, Diaz/Hairston, Choate, Sherrill on MiLB deal. If they got Jenks, they could let Joba take the last rotation spot, but we all know that ship has sailed.
I think Prior is done. The only thing enticing is his name, but the talent is gone. How about a flier on Rich Harden as a reliever?
Not sure how Jenks doesn’t blow the budget, but he’d make a superb ‘pen addition. I’d much prefer to blow up the Marlins calling center and trade for Ricky Nolasco.
I’m not a fan of Choate if we’re going to go the free agent route for a lefty let’s at least go after a Pedro Feliciano or Fuentes and make it worth out while.
I’m a huge fan of Scott Hairston because of his versatility in the field and his power potential from the right side.
I heard the Yankees have no interest in George Sherill which is a little surprising to me but I guess they don’t want to go with someone who was coming off that bad a mechanical year.
I’m with Mo no to Prior he’s nothing more than soft tossing middle relief anyway I hear not worth even a minor league deal IMO.
I would love to see the Yankees take a flier on Harden as a reliever though as Mo mentioned above, he’s limited himself to just two pitches anyway now and it appears injuries have ended another stellar starting arm but he has the kind of stuff to be like a Kerry Wood type in the 8th for us possibly.
you may get one wish:
Joel Sherman: Mark Prior’s agt, John Boggs, tells me mutual interest with #Yankees but no deal yet.
Apparently the Rangers and Yankees are “the finalists” for his DL time, oops, I mean services according to MLB rumor.
While that wish may be coming true another has ended Matt Diaz has signed a 2 year deal with the Pirates, might as well since there is no way we would’ve given 2 years, hopefully this opens the door for Scott Hairston.
If we’re talking my personal wish list with nobody off limits then I would say Scott Hairston, Brian Fuentes, Russell Martin, re-sign Kerry Wood and obviosuly last but not least Cliff Lee.
That would solidify the team going into the season in my eyes, it allows you to send Cervelli to triple A while Montero and Martin catch, Fuentes and Wood solidify the back of the bullpen specifically the 8th inning and Scott Hairston can backup all 3 OF positions and bring some Marcus Thamesish pop as well.
I think Fuentes is going to get multiple years so I think the Yankees are out on a Benoit type of deal so I think their is a real chance we end up with Feliciano which I am fine with since he destroys left handed hitting, I doubt very much Wood comes back because I think someone will let him close but I think we have a real shot at both Hairston and Martin.
All in all an offseason of Lee, Feliciano, Martin and either or both Hairston brothers is a prety re-tooled team with a good shot at the WS.
