I understand Derek’s anger at how the negotiations went, and noted on a few occasions that the Yankees would have been better served keeping most of what was said private. That said, much like his request for 5 years and 100+ million dollars or Casey Close’s “baffled” comment, many of the things that were said were simply negotiating ploys intended to put pressure on the Jeter camp. We can argue about whether these tactics worked, but both sides need to look at what happened much like an arbitration case. In arbitration situation, the team often skewers the player so as to argue that he does not deserve the salary he is asking for. It may not feel good, but players tend to realize that it is part of the process and eventually move on. Hopefully, Derek can accept the fact that much of what was said was exaggerated so as to gain negotiating position, and he can go back to being the face of the franchise.

A man with poor performance asked huge money more than he deserves, then getting angry because now we know what the person he is.
Actually he still get more than he deserves. If I were in a situation like him, I would be shame instead of angry.
If he’s angry the guy he should be talking to is his loud mouth agent. Jeter did not get one red cent more than he was going to from the start. “Baffled” ? Baffled at the contract offer that you then signed ?
Give me a break. Shut the F up and go play baseball. I don’t want to hear another BS word from Jeter being “angry”.
Come on now people ready the context of the quote. Jeter begins the quote talking about the way the media handle the situation, then continues on to say how that angered him. You do realize that Mariano requested 18 million and got denied and awarded 15. During his declined period there was no fuss about him. Jeters Agent, I repeat Jeter’s agent used the term “baffled” not Jeter himself. Yeah Jeter was still a little money hungry about the situation, but hes Derek Jeter not Miguel Tejada. After 15 years of the New York Press loving Derek Jeter to have them turn their backs on him so quickly; starting polls about who is more important Derek Jeter or Cliff Lee. Fuhgettabout it, I’d be pissed too.
You don’t have to read the context you can watch him say it on TV he clearly placed blame on both the media and organization for how it was handled…. With that said people really have to stop talking about Jeter’s agent like he is some rogue out their making statements and Jeter is at home screaming “what are you saying!” Agents for players they do what players say and as a player you are responsible for anything your agent says.
Cliff Lee was is way more valuable and the poll was less about Jeter and more to see how the people on this site think either emotionally or buiness like…. obviously close to 30% think with emotions.
Regarless of the context of his quote. I think that 30% was just effected by the media in such a way they they started to get pissed at Jeter. Does he deserve the money he asked for? No i don’t think so at all. But again just put yourself in his shoes. The greatest shortstop in the history of the New York Yankees for the last 15 years, 5 championships, the captain, beloved by people of new york including those who don’t even know baseball, the most famous face in sports (arguable). And you are going to take a pay cut? Do i personally agree with it NO, because i couldn’t even dream of that opportunity. It is greedy but also totally understandable. As a life long Yankee fan I will defend Derek until the end because he is the biggest part New York Yankee Baseball of the 90′s and 2000′s.
I would argue Mariano Rivera is the greatest Yankee of the 90′s and 2000′s, I think he will get a higher percentage of HOF votes and he is clearly the greatest at his position all time while Jeter isn’t top 10, Jeter isn’t even a better SS than his 3rd baseman. I also believe we could have replaced Jeter with a different good but not great SS at any point and still won but without Mo Jeter doesn’t have as many rings for sure.
Also defending someone you know is wrong because of emotions is exactly why fans shouldn’t be involved in buisness because they forget to think.
As far as most “recognizable faces in sports” I would think Jeter is 3rd in his own commercial to two guys who’s sports no one watches in America, Federer and Woods. As far as just sports goes I would say Tom Brady is way more recognizable outside New York than Jeter and none of that has anything to do with already overpaying a guy who wanted 23 million a year (reportedly).
Misspoke, Mariano is the obvious choice. But all your defenses, true or not, do not tell me that you placed yourself in his shoes to understand his reasons for anger. I don’t know who you are, but I would not be surprised if you were not involved with Brian Cashman and his decisions. So if that is the case do not scrutinize a fan for thinking like a fan when you are indeed just a fan yourself. Any person that watches baseball for the drama (a fan), that does not want to see Derek Jeter win another championship with the Yankees is no longer a fan. You can then join Brian Cashman in the front office where they are not allowed to have attachments. If you want to believe that players are just employees who can decline in performance and then can be tossed away. Then you no longer enjoy baseball the way it should be enjoyed.
I’m probably the biggest “sports fan” I know bar none but I have never thought of players as anymore than employees who should make as much as they can while they are in demand but the trade off is once they decrease below their “asking price” yes you “throw them away” to use your wording.
I have put myself in Jeter’s shoes in this situation and when I slipped my feet into his 1000 dollar gator shoes, put on my expensive suit, had sex with Minka Kelly and realized I had just been paid over 200 million for on the field play alone and millions more through endorsements I would have taken the 3/45 and asked for a position in the FO or minor league managing position once I retired but that’s just me.
I’m a fan but I tend to be rational and I tend to side with my organization because I’m not a fan of the New York Derek Jeter’s… apparently you are and that’s fine but Derek could leave tomorrow and I would still be a Yankee bleeding Blue, I’ve read countles fans say they wouldn’t be Yankee fans anymore if Jeter left and I say fine those people aren’t Yankee fans anyway.
If being a fan means I can’t use my brain and seperate my emotions from buisness just like you have to do every day in life then fine I’m not a “fan”…. Call me a Yankee stock holder and I want my team’s (stock) to go up not down because somebody can’t stand for the Yankees to win without Jeter.
I also don’t watch sports for the drama, I watch it to win pretty plain and simply, you feel apart of a team and by extension when they win you win and when they lose you lose. I have never felt better about a loss by losing dramatically (if anything it’s worse) and I never felt bad about a win because we blew the other team out, I woulf watch every game next year I could evenif you guaranteed they win every game 10-0.
You are probably one of those people who throws the remote at the T.V. when the Yankees lose. Clearly you hate Derek Jeter given that you should him no respect in any of the comments following your last response to me. You have no patience and you truly are the stereotypical Yankee fan that the world loves to hate.
Sorry, Derek Jeter is most certainly in the “top 10″ all time for Shortstops, and more likely in the top 4.
Who are you putting ahead of Jeter besides Honus Wagner, Cal Ripken, and Robin Yount ? And I would point out that not ONE of those 3 played SS as long as Jeter already has, let alone for 3 mnore years. Same goes for A-Rod who also loses points for dipping in the PED pond to put up at least some of his numbers at SS.
Alex loses no points from me for PED because we have no idea if Jeter did or not or anyone else for that matter, I’m not going to proclaim everyone with no evidence innocence on the grounds that they didn’t get caught and in the end I don’t really care if they took PEDs or not they still put up the numbers and not a single person knows to what degree it affected anything.
No one will ever make me a “he loses points for PEDs” kind of guy so don’t even try.
Jeter is almost certainly top 10. He’s top 3 or 4 offensively, so you need to decide how much you subtract for defense. But Im confident that he’s top 10.
Wagner, Ripken, Arky Vaughan, Alex, Ozzie Smith (the position was built on D), Yount and if you count Ernie Banks as playing enough shortstop (though he played as much or more first) then I would say he’s above Jeter as well so yes it appears he is in the top 10 he’s just in the bottom 3 of the top 10 but I shorted him none the less.
Ozzie Smith ? Yeah, great defensive shortstop. Too bad offense is significantly more imporant than defense. No chance Ozzie Smith is consdered ahead of Jeter on the alltime list of SS.
Three words to Derek: Get…over…it. Most of us will never make $50 million-plus in our lifetime, much less when we are nearing the end of our career and our skills are declining.

Jeter should really just take the rest of the off-season to get ready to rebound off last year’s near-career lows. Stop talking to the press Jeter! If he thinks the media and elements of the fanbase turned on him, he’s in for a rough next three years if he can’t step it up.
A .270/.340/.370 hitter who can’t defend while making $17 million is going to get booed and covered negatively by the press. The Lupicas of the world will go silent if DJ’s decline goes uninterrupted. The onus is on Derek to make sure he’s remembered fondly.

I don’t think anything Cashman said was exaggerated.
That is a very modern way of thinking when it comes to a shortstop, the ability for a shortstop to hit at anything near the level we’ve seen latley didn’t come until the 90′s before that if you hit at all it was a plus but defense was how you were graded 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
If shortstop Z gives up 20 runs and drives in/scores a total of 18 runs and shortstop Z takes away 20 runs while driving in/scoring 10 runs who would you rather have?
If you look at Ozzie’s “peak” from an offensive standpoint you are drawn to a 5 year period in which he gets gradually better, peaks and then fades away from those numbers forever then his “offensive production isn’t as bad as people make it out to be.

Now while these aren’t Jeter numbers when you consider how much better his defense is in every single one of those seasons than Jeter’s you have to think that those seasons can beat out most of Jeter’s overall seasons, he never slugged like Jeter but that wasn’t his game this is a man with 580 SB, with only 148 CS.
WAR has them very similar but Jeter slightly on top through 15 seasons Smith had a career WAR of 66.7 (in that time span) and Jeter has a WAR of 70.4 currently.
If he isn’t above Jeter on that list he is the name directly under him
