Aceves and Gardner Require Surgery
Mark Feinsand with the news:
Alfredo Aceves had surgery on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to repair a fractured left clavicle sustained in a bicycle-riding accident in Mexico. Surgery was performed by Yankees Team Physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad. Aceves has been prescribed six weeks of initial rest and will need a total of three months for full rehabilitation.
Brett Gardner is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for right wrist tendinitis. He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
Gardner dealt with wrist issues for much of the second half of the season, and many have theorized that his statistical dip in that portion of the year can be attributed to the injury. Gardner did hit fewer line drives down the stretch than he did in the two months prior to the injury, so there may be something to this theory.
As for Aceves, I doubt the Yankees are counting on him to be a major cog in the 2011 bullpen, but he could be a pleasant surprise if he can return to full strength and perform as he did prior to his back injury. He can serve as a swingman and fill the role that was shared by such luminaries such as Chad Gaudin and Sergio Mitre in 2010. Aceves is almost certain to be an improvement over those arms, and his return would add much needed depth to a bullpen that will likely miss Kerry Wood.

Is Gardner’s wrist injury a potential CHRONIC condition? What’s the chances his wrist integrity keeps deteriorating?
Ugh … Its kinda of a sickening feeling. Lets go get Crawford.
Well considering Nick Johnson had Wrist surgery in 2008 and has missed parts of the last 2 seasons due to that same wrist (as well as the injury zapping his power), I would say yes it has a chance of turning chronic. Even with that said though there is no way in hell we need to sign Crawford…. Just another huge contract and he would cost us Cliff Lee.
Not that I know of. I’m pretty sure the injury occurred in the course of a game, and isn’t just a general soreness thing.
What does that even mean Mo? A wrist injury can’t be chronic if it’s an on field injury? I don’t see how where you injure your wrist really matters to how bad the structural damage is or if the problems returns on another slight injury (the guy makes a living sliding into bags hands first).
If he’s having surgery then it’s at least somewhat serious and something they feel needs to be addressed and as unlikely as I think it is that this will continue to bother him given what he does (steals bases) and the fact that I believe this is the 2nd time in two years he has injured a wrist there is some conern however small it may be.
No, that’s not what I said. There are injuries based on general structural weakness, and those based on single events. It stands to reason that those based on structural weakness are more likely to be termed chronic than something that occurred from an in game event and then was corrected in surgery. But Im not a doctor, so I cant guarantee that.
It’s not that simple. You can have an injury which is does not require surgery, the doctor prescribes rest or strengthening the area through rehab. If that doesn’t work, and you re-injure the same area, then you get surgery. They generally avoid surgery if at all possible.
Guys who get wrist surgery generally have a drop off in power the first year back.
Is there any way to have minus-HRs?
