From the BBWAA:

Seattle Mariners righthander Felix Hernandez may have had trouble posting victories in 2010, but he was a convincing winner in the voting for the American League Cy Young Award. Hernandez, known as “King Felix,” was crowned despite posting a victory total that was the lowest for any winner in either league among starting pitchers in a full season and matched the lowest for a winning starter in any season.

Pitching for a team that averaged only 3.2 runs per game, Hernandez compiled a 13-12 record with a league-leading 2.27 ERA in 34 starts. He also led the league in innings (249 2/3) and finished second in strikeouts with 232, one behind Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim righthander Jered Weaver.

CC Sabathia finished in 3rd place, right behind David Price of the Rays. Felix won the award fairly comfortably, receiving 21 of 28 first place votes, with Price nabbing 4 and CC the remaining 3. The remaining pitchers to receive votes were, in order of finish: Lester, Weaver, Buchholz, Lee, Soriano, Cahill, Soria, Liriano, and Verlander.

Felix was a deserving winner, and I have no major issues with how the voting shook out. I likely would have had Cliff Lee and Francisco Liriano higher than they finished, but I do not have a huge problem with writers recognizing other pitchers with 4th and 5th place votes. Congratulations to CC Sabathia on an excellent season, and hopefully he can move up a few spots on this list in 2011.

Ironic that the award, named for the WINNINGEST pitcher of all time, now seems not to values wins at all.

You’re right. The voters should be a little more stupid than they usual are. Good idea.

Haha EJ don’t even act like a tiny bit of you deep down was mad CC didn’t win even though you know Felix deserved the award, we all know Hernandez was the best pitcher of the year (he would have won the award if there was still only 1 for both leagues) but my bias had me rooting for CC and had he won I would have done nothing but championed it haha.

Who said that? You just trying to pick a fight? That alll you got?

        • T.O. Chris says:

Grow up, all he’s saying is that wins are a very small portion of the Cy Young and the voters for one time actually got it right.

Even Cy Young isn’t the greatest pitcher of all time, he’s probably just outside the top 10.

You grow up asshole. You sabre guys have a universe of interesting stuff to deal in but as long as you’re arrogant assholes you won’t be winning any converts. Putting word in someone’s mouth is just trolling. I think EJ must be on her period.

No one attacked you so there is no reason to get so offensive… my statement was simply grow up because trying to pick a fight on the internet is immature, you asked “is that all you got” like someone was going to throw down or something.

I’m not sure anyone would call me a sabre guy I tend to use to the new statistics with old and cross check it all with what I actually see with my eyes but even without sabermetrics you can tell with your eyes and old stats that Felix had a historic season for the AL.

    • EJ Fagan says:

The wins thing isn’t even a “Stats vs. Eyes” thing. Its a “stupid vs. not stupid” thing. At some point, you just have to disengage from the argument and call a spade a spade.

  3. T.O. Chris says:

Ok, let’s all step back here. This got out of hand.

Well really only 1 person was really out of line in the whole thing, no one else called names or demeaned just stated the truth.

  4. Steve S. says:

Glad too see the league’s best pitcher win an individual (not team based) award. The BWAA is starting to get it.

Yeah, the other Steve S stabbed a guy in the heart with a trident.

Seriously tho, as I beleive Keith Law and others have pointed out, this really isn’t a saber “win.” Namely because king Felix would of won in most other traditional stats, just not in wins. So its a win for anyone who feels individual wins are overrated.
