I’d been thinking about running this post since Mariano Rivera blew the save against Texas earlier on the road trip that mercifully ended yesterday. The topic leaped ahead of some of the other post ideas I’ve been considering after the Yankee legend blew a second save on the same road trip on Sunday. The bad news is that the Yankees lost the game. The good news is that Mo is still having one of his best seasons ever.

Here’s what Mariano has done this season, on the year, by month, and by half:

For most of the year he’d had an ERA below 1.00 and a WHIP at times below 0.70, both of which are obviously incredible. Once Mo’s ERA in particular settled permanently above 1.00 I wanted to take a closer look at his numbers to make sure his strong start to the season wasn’t also obscuring a mediocre end to the season. I should’ve known better than to have so little faith.

Just about every number in the above table is spectacular. Rivera has peformed worse in the second half, but that’s only because he spoiled Yankee fans so much in the first half. He would still be having an amazing season if he’d posted his second half stats over the course of an entire year.

The same analysis applies to the month of September, which isn’t even clearly his worst month on the year. Over the course of only half a month, Rivera has still managed to put up respectable numbers in a September that is only bad by his lofty standards. Furthermore, the month isn’t over. Come October I predict the stats for this month of the season will come down a bit.

While it is unfortunate that Yankee fans have to add Mariano Rivera‘s name to the long list of things that went wrong for the team on this current road trip, he’s still Mo and he’s still doing what Mo does. The analysis bears this out. A week from now this will all be a distant, painful memory.
