I missed this one (who schedules baseball games on a Saturday evening in July anyway?), but was ecstatic to check my BlackBerry to see that the Yanks pulled out a close one, beating the Rays 5-4 in rather dramatic fashion.
The Yankees’ three hottest hitters in July essentially singlehandedly kept the Yankees in this game and were ultimately responsible for the victory, as Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher hit separate game-tying home runs, and Robinson Cano hit the go-ahead shot in the ninth inning off Rafael Soriano.
Javier Vazquez was decent enough, throwing 6 1/3 innings of four-run ball, while the Yankee bullpen was nails, as Boone Logan, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera shut the door on the Rays. Matt Joyce hit a home run against the Yankees for the second-straight game and in doing so has quickly become my new least favorite player, despite never having heard of him prior to this series. I guess the Rays didn’t need an additional bat at the trade deadline; since Joyce came up from the minors the dude has flat-out raked to the tune of .232/.364/.512 with a .379 wOBA over 99 plate appearances.
The rubber game is this afternoon at 1:40pm; CC Sabathia vs. James Shields. Should be another great one.
