The Orioles had jumped out to a 2-0 lead against CC Sabathia in the bottom of the 3rd inning of last night’s contest, and though it seemed highly unlikely that that would end up being the final score, I was still a bit frustrated to see Sabathia losing to the O’s — especially with the Yanks facing junkballer extraordinaire Chris Tillman (who had of course been lit up by the Red Sox in his previous outing).
Thankfully the Yankees remembered that they were the Yankees and that they were playing the Orioles, and were able to put together a mini-rally in the 6th — aided by some incredibly sloppy play by the birds — to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, and they ended up winning 4-2.
CC Sabathia tossed seven innings of two-run ball, scattering nine hits and racking up eight strikeouts. Four of Sabathia’s six wins on the season have come against the Orioles.
The offense didn’t do much, although Robinson Cano picked up his second consecutive three-hit game, and both Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez had two hits apiece. Francisco Cervelli also hit a big two-out RBI single in the eighth to grab an insurance run.
Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera each pitched scoreless frames, as Mo picked up his 14th save. The Yanks go for their third straight sweep of the Orioles tonight at 7:05pm at Camden Yards.

Hi Larry,
CC got his act together for his last two innings or so, and Joba didn't look to sharp, but a win is a win. CC hasn't looked so great in his last 3 or 4 starts, especially fastball command. Joba was assisted by an awesome catch by that new kid in LF (name is escaping me right now) thats been up for a few weeks. if he misses that diving catch… I don't know how that game would have ended.

I've read a few stories today of people being nervous re: Sabathia (Joel Sherman and Rob Neyer) but I'm not worried about the big man. He's shown me enough good things and has enough of a track record that there's no reason to get too up in arms.
For what it's worth, Fangraphs' updated Zips projection has CC finishing the year at a 3.86 ERA and 3.85 FIP — while those are a touch higher than most probably would've expected prior to the season, those are still more-than-respectable numbers, and I still expect the Yankees to win every time CC starts.
As for Joba, I really have no idea. He's been ridiculously inconsistent — much as I hate to use Joe Morgan's favorite word — and I don't necessarily expect him to escape unscathed in the majority of his outings. It seems like he either has his elite stuff or comes woefully short. A better team might've been able to touch Joba up last night.
yeah i think CC's problems are fixable and he'll work them out – if last May is his version of a bad month, I can live with that.
when Joba comes into the game, I seem to hold my breath; especially after that sat afternoon against the Indians.
i'm going to the saturday game against the Pirates (I mean Astros… whatever) for another shot at a winner!
