The Yankees were owned by a total scrub pitcher for the second straight night, falling to Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies 7-1 in New York’s second straight lackluster effort. I’m trying not to get too bent out of shape over the loss — hey, offensive slump or not, the Phillies are still a very good baseball team — but really, Yanks? Only four hits and one run over 7 innings against a guy who came into this start with a 4.80 ERA and FIP?
Andy Pettitte delivered another fine outing (I hope I never have to stop typing that phrase), hurling seven innings of three-run ball and racking up seven strikeouts — one most nights, this should be enough for the Yankees to win. Pettitte ran into trouble in the 4th and 5th innings, and both times Shane Victorino was in the middle of it, scoring the first run of the game and then hitting a two-run homer.
And just to make sure the offense didn’t feel that bad about not doing its job, the Yankee bullpen also got in on the sucktastrophe by coughing up four runs in the top of the ninth to completely scuttle any chance of a comeback. Three of those runs were charged to Joba Chamberlain, who couldn’t get anyone out, and one to Damaso Marte, who seemed to think the objective of the game was to not throw pitches anywhere near the strike zone.
Though Tampa Bay lost, Boston obviously won again — bringing them within a mere two games of first place — and is a wildly unsurprising 7-2 on its Interleague sojourn thus far, while the Yanks are a sad 5-4. This series played out exactly the opposite of how I had expected, and now the Yankees have to stick it to the Mets this weekend before they lose any additional ground to the Sox.

They have the best record in baseball. Sometimes pitchers are better than hitters, regardless of FIP. I don't know how to explain your incessant anger and whining, except by saying that you, sir, are a bitch. The Yankees did not take a night off, you moron. They were beaten by a major league pitcher who was on his game. Sad 5-4? For Pete's sake, do you hear yourself? You are a sad, angry, miserable human being. Intolerable.
How about identifying yourself before slinging insults, anonymous? "Sad, angry, miserable human being"? Ever heard of venting? You don't know me from Adam, so relax.
Obviously some of my reaction is hyperbolic, but I'm still allowed to get annoyed/frustrated by the team, even if they did get beaten by a Major League-caliber pitcher. Sorry that I expect the Yankees to be able to score more than one run off of Kyle Kendrick.
