I’ve written about this sort of thing before and it’s, again, rearing its ugly head.

The Reds may use Aroldis Chapman as a reliever.

The article doesn’t say anything about this being a permanent move, but the fact that they’re even thinking about it is disheartening. Frankly, that last line scares me. You can never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever have too much starting pitching depth. Maybe they could put him there towards the end of the season IF Chapman is coming up on an innings limit and IF the big league team REALLY needs some bullpen help and IF the Reds have a shot at making the playoffs and IF that an extra bullpen arm could put them over the top.

Look, Reds execs, if you’re seriously thinking about doing this long term, don’t. You need only to look at your N.L. East counterpart the Mets and their crosstown neighbors, the Yankees.

Wasn’t the Yanks assessment of this kid that he would end up in the BP?

Or, look at David Price or Phil Hughes.

The Reds badly need bullpen arms, and they do not spend $ like the Yankees. $ is a big factor in any baseball decision the Reds make. Here-they avoid having to spend $ at the deadline for a pitcher, and they already spent that money on Chapman–it’s just like a pick-up at no extra cost.

This makes all the sense in the world to the Reds brass, and to Reds fans who want the see the phenom that they spent all the money for. Reds fans want to utilize any option to get them to the playoffs again, this year. Plus the kid sees the majors, just like he wants, like, right now.

Looking thru the Yankee prism, with the talent loaded rosters, with the playoffs there every year, the $ if needed, the ability to have patience, all of your arguments make sense.

Looking thru the Reds prism, bringing him up for a relief tryout, in this first real chance for a playoff berth since the early 1990′s, makes all the sense in the world.
(Just as long as they have the sense to end it quickly, if it goes badly.) remember–They brought Joe Nuxhall up when he was 15 yrs old, and that worked out eventually.

Matt, you really ought to get out of NY more often. :>)

Another silly post that ignores Price, Hughes and about two decades of Orioles successful development of starting pitchers under Earl Weaver & Co. Ever consider that the real problem is between Joba’s ears?
