When Robinson Cano knocked in the Yankees’ 3rd run in the 9-3 blowout loss to the Red Sox yesterday, it marked the 29th out of 30 games in which the Yankees have tallied at least 3 runs. While the story of 2010 has been the starting rotation, the offense has shown remarkable consistency, as well as the ability to hang a crooked number on the board. Despite getting minimal production from players such as Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez, Nick Johnson, and Curtis Granderson, the Yankees have found a way to put enough runs on the board with regularity. Here are the number of times that they have tallied each run total, with their won loss record in those games in parentheses:

2 runs: 1 (0-1)
3 runs: 5 (2-3)
4 runs: 6 (3-3)
5 runs: 2 (2-0)
6 runs: 4 (3-1)
7 runs: 7 (6-1)
8 runs: 1 (1-0)
10+ runs: 4 (4-0)

In all, they have averaged 5.93 runs, good for first in the majors, and their median performance is 6 runs. With the players listed above struggling and Jorge Posada shuttling in and out of the lineup, it has been players such as Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner, and Frankie Cervelli carrying the offense on a nightly basis. While these guys are unlikely to stay this hot all season, you would expect a similar return to the mean by Teixeira and Rodriguez. Unless everybody improbably slumps at the same time, this offense is likely to continue putting up runs on a consistent basis.

A consistent offense coupled with strong starting pitching and a good bullpen is going to win a lot of games. Unless the Yankees experience a rash of serious injuries, it is hard to see them going on a long losing streak or falling far off their current pace. It should be an exciting summer in the Bronx.
