I’m out of creative headlines for this one. The Rays beat the Yanks 10-6, as Tampa Bay’s Wade Davis lulled the Yankees to sleep, giving up two runs over 5 2/3. A.J. Burnett was crap again, going 6 2/3 IP, putting 14 men on base and giving up 6 runs. That’s a 2.10 WHIP, which isn’t going to win a lot of games.
Oh, and Marcus Thames sprained his ankle running over his bat in the baseline after lacing a single. I have to imagine other teams have had more injury-riddled months in the history of Major League Baseball, but the 2010 Yankees’ May has to be up there somewhere. To wit, here is a list of players on the Yankees’ 25-man roster that have missed at least a game in May:

Nick Swisher
Curtis Granderson
Nick Johnson
Mariano Rivera
Andy Pettitte
Alfredo Aceves
Chan Ho Park
Including Thames, that’s 36% of the roster. Now I know how the 2009 Mets must’ve felt.
The Yankees actually had a chance to get back in this one in the bottom of the 6th, when it was still 6-2. Alex Rodriguez crushed a booming solo shot to dead center to lead the inning off (finally bringing his SLG above .500 — keep ‘em coming, ‘Rod), but in an absolutely mind-bogglingly shocking occurrence, Derek Jeter grounded out to shortstop with the bases loaded several batters later to end the inning. In case you’re one of those readers who doesn’t bother to click the links containing my Twitter updates from the games, the first one points out that prior to tonight’s game Jeter was leading the American League by far in GB% at 67.8%.
After a quiet bottom of the 7th from the Yankees’ 2-3-4 hitters, the bullpen completely unraveled in the top of the 8th. As Boone Logan is contractually obligated to surrender at least one walk and earned run per appearance, he did just that, while Mark Melancon — who I suggested get another look the other day — continued to completely fail at getting outs at the Major League level, giving up two runs on five hits. The Yankee offense made some noise with a four-run bottom of the 9th, but it was too little, too late.
Ugly game, ugly night and the Yankees’ lousy play on both sides of the ball ended up putting me in a Level IV coma.

while i commented in todays most recent post that Jeter should stay where he is, he does ground out to short CONSTANTLY. On the other hand, if he grounds to short with Gardner on 1st, I'm not going to be happy. Gardner will have to steal on the first pitch every time.
Not sorry I missed this game. I feel that Logan might be effective as a 1 and done guy, but thats it – he shouldnt make any other appearances accept as a mop up man.
I know we havent seen much of Melancon so far in his young career, but I just dont believe in this guy. His stuff just dosnt seem to be that good and he looks over matched at this level.
