The Yankees were shutout for the second time in three games, losing to the Tigers 6-0 on Thursday afternoon and also losing only their second series of the year, three games to one.
I don’t know what it is about weekday day games this season, but the Yankees absolutely suck in them. Today’s loss brought their record in weekday day games to 2-4, and two of those — rather incredibly — have been CC Sabathia starts.
Just as I began typing this recap, Sabathia stood at 58 pitches through five innings, and I was wondering whether he’d end up throwing another complete game loss. Two seconds later he surrendered a two-RBI double, putting the Yankees in a 5-0 hole.
So clearly Sabathia didn’t have his shutdown stuff today, but it’s not like it would have mattered given the sputtering Yankee offense. I suppose it’s hard to expect much when your bottom three hitters are Juan Miranda, Randy Winn and Gregg Golson, but that doesn’t excuse the rest of the lineup, who were held to an anemic four hits over 6 2/3 innings by Tiger starter Justin Verlander. I know Verlander’s great and all, but the Yankees are better than this.
The less said about this game the better, as we turn the page and look forward to hosting the Twins and getting back on the winning track this weekend.
