Great points. The Yanks have put together many great seasons after getting off to slow starts, and this Boston team is definitely talented enough to do the same. I’m almost a little concerned that the Yankees are off to a hot start. I like it better when Steve Phillips and co. are picking them to miss the playoffs and they are trailing Boston by 5 games at the all-star break, only to once again have the best second-half record in the league. However, I’ll take the current situation in a heartbeat.

While I certainly expect them to improve, just how much is open to debate.
I don’t think I’d judge Ortiz against his career numbers. Was his boom and then bust is due to steroids? I think it’s very likely, but in any case, I think the chances of him getting a lot better than he’s been the last 1,000 ABs are pretty small.
Mike Cameron may turn out to be like some of the guys the Yankees signed at a similar part of their careers. There’s no guarantee his final numbers are much better than those listed. Ditto Scutaro.
I think Varitek may cool off a bit, and is Ellsbury a .333 hitter all year?

I think having a glove guy in LF in Yankee Stadium can be justified to a degree (Especially if you have a platoon partner with power). I think doing that in Fenway is absurd. Another 10′ closer to the plate, and he’s playing shortfield.

It’s not very likely they finish under 500, but giving them 95+ wins with the current roster construction never made sense to me.

I think they are average or better everywhere, and in some places are well above average. I see them as a 90+ win team.

Well said. One can’t ever rule out the possibility of a major trade going down before the AS break. Hoyer (SD) might actually now be able to extract a Casey Kelly plus other young talent since Westmoreland’s surgery. if the RS are closing in on the WC , i can def see Theo cough up the talent to land Gonzalez.

Pitching wins in the end, they’ll compete.

    • The Big City of Dreams says:

exactly once their pitching gets on a role it will be tough to deal with on a night by night basis but their offense…man its not good at all.

  5. Chofo says:

Their pitching is very good and could be insane. It will drive them all year, just wait till they heat up. Now, the offense is another thing. I don’t expect to much out of it.
