Seriously? Joel Pineiro?

I’m sure after I’ve had a few hours to digest the Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Angels today I’ll be a bit more rational about it, but something about the Yankees’ powerhouse offense getting absolutely shutdown by the likes of Joel Pineiro really stings.

I suppose I have to begrudgingly tip my cap to Pineiro — seven innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts against the Yankee offense is a damn fine day’s work.

For Home Run Javy’s part, he sort of kept the Yanks in the game, but let things get out of control in the 6th. While 5 2/3 of four-run ball is an improvement over his debut, it’s still pretty awful.

But moreso than Vazquez’s inconsistent pitching, the offense was the real culprit today. It’s extremely hard to win baseball games when no one is hitting the ball. The offense seemed to come alive somewhat in the bottom of the 8th once Pineiro was finally lifted, picking up two runs off the Angels’ bullpen, but an exciting rally was snuffed out by yet another piss-poor Tex at-bat and ended with a Posada strikeout.

Can someone please tell Tex that it’s June, July, August or any month that’s not April? Additionally, we’re now eight games into the season and neither our #3 or #4 hitters have hit a single home run. Some power from our $20 million-plus men would really be fantastic.

I know it’s only the eighth game of the year, and I do apologize if I sound like a petulant child. I guess I’m just mostly frustrated with the Yankees’ myriad self-fulfilling prophecies — questions about Vazquez being able to pitch well as a Yankee; Teixeira historically being a slow-starter; the offense sucking against a mediocre pitcher — coming true.
