As I write this, the Yankees and Red Sox have not started their game yet. Kim Jones is currently running through the Yankee lineup and giving little anecdotes about each player. Before this game started, I wanted to write this, knowing it would go up today (Monday).

No matter what happens in the next few days, the tone will not be set for the rest of 2010. I think we’re all rational enough to know this, but I just wanted to reiterate this point. If the Yankees sweep this series, I won’t be surprised. If the Red Sox sweep this series, I won’t be surprised. If the Yanks or Sox take two of three, I won’t be surprised.

Regardless, no matter how good or bad either team looks in the next three games, it won’t tell us much about the rest of the season (unless, of course, there’s a massive injury). We know that at the end of September, the Yankees and Red Sox will likely be sitting atop the standings of the American League East.

For now, let’s sit back and enjoy this opening week. We finally have baseball back full time and that is something that will always bring smiles to our faces.
