If Brett Gardner were to injure himself today (on a slide, etc.), forcing a trip to the 15-day disabled list, what would the Yankees’ left field situation look like tomorrow? Would manager Joe Girardi then use Marcus Thames more often, despite his iron glove, or would he simply alter the existing platoon’s configuration and replace Gardner with the veteran Randy Winn, and his respectable .289/.348/.417 career line as a left-handed hitter facing right-handed pitching. Using a Winn-Thames platoon seems like the likelier outcome in this specific hypothetical scenario.

I also wonder just how effective such a platoon would be compared to Gardner-Thames…

I would definitely think Winn and Thames would be platooned. It wouldn’t be too pretty, but considering the Yankees are above average at every other position I think they would be okay.

Colin Curtis has been very impressive since last fall.Eventually he gets a shot.
