Here are a few quick news items on the day:

  • After some speculation earlier in the year, Derek Jeter confirmed that he wants to be an owner one day.
  • Since being released by the Yankees, the Mets, Dodgers, and D-Backs have checked in on Chad Gaudin.
  • According to team GM, Brian Cashman, Joba Chamberlain is still a starter, he’s just in the ‘pen in 2010.

Does anyone actually believe that (especially if Joba dominates out of the ‘pen this year)?

Yes, I believe it. The team had one spot, they gave it to Hughes. But Cashman said they see him as a starter, and has preached all offseason about having both starting in the future. The idea that the Yankee front office won’t be able to pull him out of the bullpen is silly considering that they have done it before AND just did it with Hughes. Phil spent most of the year in the pen, and now is in the rotation. They can do the same thing in 2011.

Joba and Hughes are completely different, though. There has never been debate about what Hughes’ role is, really, even after his dominant season in the ‘pen. Beyond that, though, he was never taken out of the rotation after pitching over 150+ innings the year prior. The Yankees were very careful with their grooming of Joba so that he could be a starter. The move to the bullpen signals an end to that. Of course Cashman is going to say Joba is still a starter because it keeps the door open, just in case, and it keeps his value up (in case a trade is ever decided upon), but if he pitches well in relief this year and collects under 100 innings, will he really be in the rotation in 2011? Again, I doubt it.

I disagree. If Cashmen didn’t truly still view Joba as a starter, he would have traded him by now. He has more value as a trade chip (and starter for someone else) than as a reliever for NY. I also completely disagree with the “especially if he dominates out of the bullpen.” Its quite the opposite. The better he pitches, the more likely he is to be given another chance at starting.

I believe it. We’ll need to replace two spots in the rotation next year. We’ll sign one big money pitcher, but we will still need to fill that other spot. Joba makes the most sense for that spot.

I agree with both responses. I see no reason not to believe it. especially since it is the only logical course of action.

Jeter wants to be an owner someday and so do I.Whomever comes up with the consortium and $500,000,0000 down will probably get the team.
