Kevin Kernan of the NY Post has an interesting article out in which he notes that Yankees icon, Derek Jeter, has expressed an interest in owning a baseball team one day. Of course, as soon as one hears this information, one wonders if Jeter could become a part-owner of the Yankees after he retires. Interestingly though, Ben Kabak of River Ave Blues ponders whether or not the Yankees could actually include an ownership share in his next contract. To be honest, I think it’s a far-fetched idea, but if Jeter truly intends on expanding his resume beyond the confines of the player title, hey, maybe it could happen. Either way, Ben’s stuff is always worth a read, so check it out.

PULEEZE, no way are any of the Yankee ownership going to give equity in the most valuable franchise in all of sports to a 36 year old ballplayer who does not want to leave anyway and can’t get more money from anyone else.
You don’t trade equity in a down market for salary unless you’re hard up or broke which neither the Steinbrenner’s nor any of their partners are.
To begin with the capitalization and “Sale” of any portion of the Yankees to anyone including a player would trigger huge capital gains for the Steinbrenner’s & group because they bought the team for almost nothing.
What did they pay? 10 million for the entire team?
What’s it worth today 1.5 billion if not much more?
SO if they gave Jeter 1% for $15 million, they already have a capital gain of 14,900,000.

I have heard Jeter express the ownership interest before and speculated that part ownership in the Yankees AA or AAA team is possible. With the current value of the Yankees at well over $1.4 billion, part ownership in the ML franchise is absurd. I also speculated about an equity deal on Jeter / Yankee merchandise a possible deal that makes sense to both parties and marriage that protects and promotes both brands.

Why would Yankees do that, he’s 36? Frankly as the years go on, they’ll probably want an excuse to let him go.
