RAB is reporting that the Yankees have placed Chad Gaudin on waivers. According to the post, now a team can pick up Gaudin, or he can be cut outright from the Yankees for a fee or enter the team’s minor league system if he clears waivers.
The details aside, this move is a head scratcher because it means that the team is inclined to keep Sergio Mitre for the start of the season, and is willing to part ways with Gaudin.
For the record, Chad has a career ERA+ of 94, which is just below average, while Mitre has a career ERA+ of 78. My math skills aren’t what they used to be, but I’m fairly confident that 94 is better than 78. The impetus for cutting Gaudin now appears to be his poor spring. Mitre has had a stronger spring, but baseball is full of examples of players who had strong springs and awful seasons. As far as I’m aware neither pitcher has provided evidence to suggest a diversion from career averages this season.

Girardi is a huge Mitre fan, right? pretty sure that's why they got him in the first place. maybe now that he's farther out from his TJ surgery, Girardi (or somebody in the organization) thinks hes going to take the next step. or maybe Mitre is cheaper?
Girardi loves Mitre. I'm not sure why. Mitre is also cheaper, but if no one claims Gaudin and the team doesn't release him outright the team has to pay both of them. The decision surprises me either way.
