Via John Harper of the Daily News:

Somewhere, Brian Cashman must have cringed when he heard the news. Not that Nick Johnson getting scratched from a spring training game is some catastrophe, but for the Yankee GM there is no escaping the tie-in between Johnson and Johnny Damon…

As you all know by now, Johnson missed yesterday’s game with a stiff lower back, and he was also held out of today’s game, as well, against Tampa Bay. However, his back is reportedly feeling better after having performed a series of exercises earlier in the day, though no set return date has been ironed out for the oft-injured Johnson.

Turning to Harper’s NJ piece, he’s overreacting, right? I know that Johnson’s injury history is enough to make even the slightest bruise newsworthy, but, even so, the response seems frenzied. I mean, bringing up Damon? Really?

What do you think? Are such reactions warranted?

i dont know if this reaction is warranted, but it’s certainly expected. get used to it. let’s just hope this walk-machine can keep that porcelain frame intact.

It’s not warranted at all, but like max said, how can we expect anything different at this point? The bottom line is that Johnson either will or won’t stay healthy and Johnny Damon, who is no longer a member of the Yankees (to the surprise of many MSM writers), has nothing to do with the outcome.

i have come to terms that he will be on the DL this years for about 60 games.is everyone kidding themselves thinking of a new out come for johnson this year.. he is a wonderful player, like baldelli, what if he didn’t have health issues.. but cashman knew this kid is the DL coming..why think other wise.. because he will only DH.. odds are he will get hurt in a strong wind.. look at how he got hurt… they should have said he had the flu…what did he do all winter, not work on his body..girardi must get montero into DH shape real fast…matsui’s knees were bad, this guys whole body is at risk moment to moment..

I heard from a million know-it-alls last year that AJ Burnett WOULD NEVER FINISH THE SEASON HEALTHY.

That’s a good point, Larry. Yes, I think Harper is overreacting if taken out of context…but the context is that we’d have to expect the writers to jump on anything like this, especially so early. That said, I think most of us are tired of hearing about Johnny Damon, and I don’t see the value-add in his name being brought up the way it was.
