Since it came up in the comments of this morning’s post, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at just how awful Baltimore has been against Boston since the unbalanced schedule was introduced in 2001:
Two-and-sixteen last season. That is absolutely and utterly shameful.
Additionally, the Orioles have had exactly one winning campaign against the Red Sox in the last nine years, and even during that year they still lost to Boston nine times. I wonder if any other team in Major League Baseball sports a winning percentage against another team over the past nine seasons that is worse than .353?
Basically, if you are the Red Sox you can pretty much expect that Baltimore will contribute to more than 10% of your season victory total in any given year (and 17% last year!). Thank you, Orioles.

I hated this so much last year. It seemed like whenever Boston was struggling, they'd have a three-game series against the stupid Orioles and every TV analyst would be like "Hey Boston looks awesome!" Of course they do, the Orioles roll over and die for them.
This is probably unfair of me, but when I saw that last year's Red Sox won 95 games, I was like "Buh, no way, there have been some really good Red Sox teams and while this team is decent, they're not that good." Without Baltimore, they were a 79-65 (.548) win team. The Yankees were 90-54 (.625).
Though, one of Baltimore's wins against Boston was a game where they came back from being down 10-1. So that's kind of cool.
Kind of funny that the only year where Baltimore had a winning record against Boston was 2004, when Boston was crazy good (no, Boston, you didn't win because of ~miracles~ or ~magic~ or whatever you want to talk about. You won because you had a really good team.).
Take a look at the Buccos season series numbers Vs. The Cards over the last decade…you might get a good laugh out of that.

Unbalanced schedule, Cards vs. Bucs:
2001: 14-3 (!)
2002: 11-6
2003: 10-7
2004: 12-5
2005: 12-4
2006*: 9-6
2007: 12-6
2008: 7-10
2009: 10-5
So the Cards are 97-52 overall (unless my math is wrong). That's a .349 winning percentage for the Bucs against the Cards. Holy crap, that's actually worse!

Wow, thanks for doing the heavy lifting there, Becca. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed that there is in fact a team that plays worse against one opponent than the Orioles do against the BoSox.
Then again, the Pirates have never lost to the Cards 16 times in one season. That has to be a record in the unbablanced era.
Kansas City against the White Sox is 61-106 (.365), that's not much better
While the Pirates never lost to a team 16 times in one season, they did go 1-14 against Milwaukee in 2008, for a worse percentage
I am super bored, so I looked it up. There's only one worse one: the 2006 Mariners were 2-17 against the 2006 Athletics.
In 2002, the Rays lost 16 games to the Red Sox and in 2004, the Diamondbacks lost 16 games to the Dodgers. These teams still did better than the 2009 Orioles vs. the Red Sox, though, because they had three wins compared to the Orioles' two.
There are a bunch of teams with a 4-15 record against certain teams in their division.
