Very little in the way of Baseball news, so here’s some fun links for your reading pleasure. I’ll start with this very cool graphic from BTB:

-Who needs coffee when you have Derek Jeter’s girlfriends?

-Paps is an idiot? Really? I had no idea!

-If I had a son, I’m not sure I’d want Mike Stanton coaching him after what was said about him in the Mitchell Report. BTW-Clever headline, Kevin.

-Yanks are looking to bring back Jerry Hairston Jr. Good move, love the versatility he brings defensively and he produces enough with the bat that you never feel like he’s an automatic out.

-Interesting Tweet from Jose Arangure Jr yesterday:

I’m willing to bet a lot of cash that if Yanks don’t sign Chapman it has more to do with makeup than money.

-Latest offer on Chapman has the Blue Jays at 23 mil, and it’s been clear from Day 1 that money will be the overriding factor in where he goes.

-Ouch.

-I seriously want to frame this quote and put it on my wall or something. 100% accurate, concise and written in simple, plain English that anyone can understand. Unlike terms like “Residual Marginal Value” which require 2 years of Economics classes to comprehend.

The moral of the story is that when you’re paying a guy close to what he’s worth, you’re not going to get back much in a trade, even if he’s quite good.

While of course this leaves out pitching, does this graph show that the fielding and speed are not as valuable as many might think it is? I mean, if you add up the percentages, the Rays should have been the best team if all these facets have equal weight (and the Rays had a higher ERA+ than the Yankees, so I don’t know if pitching could account for the difference). Am I wrong about what this graph is trying to portray?

I wouldn’t draw any broad conclusions based on 1 year of data. The Yanks were an outstanding offensive team last year, but middling in Defense and Speed. If you did a similar chart for the 08 Rays, they would excel in Defense and Speed, but were middling in Power and On Base. If there’s any conclusion to draw, it’s that you can win if you excel in at least two of these areas.

numbers are nice, but as you said don’t create a definite picture, ask showalter, well he might not admit that,, for my money it is two things most, e.r.a. and o.b.p. to me how ever a guy gets on base is what counts, usually those guys are pain in rears when up. eat a pitcher up.. now era , some guys fight harder when guys are on base..bearing down and allowing few runs..
