Via Joel Sherman, Brian Bruney has been traded to the Nationals for a PTBNL.

Ah, it’s the end of an era. I’m sure he’ll be missed…

ughh.. to the nats? I dont want any of their players. Id rather it be w Atlanta- at least they have some players Id be interested in. I guess we gave him up for zilch in return. im not saying he was going to net us a big return bc of his performance, but still.

    • Chris H. says:

I should have mentioned this, but Yankees save nearly $2M since he’s arbitration eligible. That’s something, especially if they’re trying to make room for a Halladay, Holliday, or another free agent.

    • We got Albaladejo from the Nats, I know he hasn’t been great but he has been something to us, so it’s not like we haven’t done a deal with the Nats that worked out before.

I really don’t see them freeing 2 million making a difference for Halladay or Holliday, they simply cost to much for 2 million to matter, Cameron maybe.

  2. Chris says:

They have a guy in their minor league system called Strasbourg or something like that (Strazburger ?). He’s under the radar at the mo, but I think we should ask for that guy. He’s a righty, with good location and projects well. He’d be a good fit for the River Dogs next year.

  3. The Scout says:

And would this not also free a spot on the 40-man roster?

  4. the other Steve S. says:

I’m guessing he’ll be the only guy on the Nats with a WS ring…

  5. Mike says:

They would never give upnserious talent like stratsburg. This move is solely to clear salary for a big signing. Melancon gets penciled into the bullpen now. He will get a shot

  6. StandingO'Neill says:

I heard a rumor that the PTBNL is Ryan Zimmerman, and he’ll stay at 3rd and Alex will move to left field. Can you confirm that please…

  7. M-Three says:

This is a good move long as this doesn’t make it so girardi puts edwar ramirez in one of those two open spots in the pen. I would rather those spots be filled by melancon and either joba or hughes for the one who is not in the rotation because you know pettitte won’t be the only starter we sign this offseasn.

    • How are 2 spots opening in the pen if only one person is leaving?

Hughes or Joba? No way! Which ever one doesn’t start in the major league rotation (Joba) should start in Scranton! It doesn’t make sense to put them in the pen after going through all this to make him a starter!

Let him develop in Scranton before wasting him out of the pen! If Joba’s velocity is still down next year he isn’t a good reliever either so you might as well do everything to make him a good starter!

I say we replace Bruney by signing Soriano so we can have a real setup man for next year!

      • M-Three says:

Well now with the trade today for granderson there are only 4 locks for the bullpen: Mo, Marte, D-Rob and Ace. Melancon is more than likely going to make it. Now with coke traded away that means Dunn is most likely in because the yanks must really be high on him for them to refuse to put in the trade.

That leaves one spot left. Anyone who thinks that pettitte is the only starter we sign this offseason must be under the influence of something. My feeling is that hughes no matter what will start.

Now that leaves joba and the unsurity of what role he will be in when the season starts. If there is no room in the rotation for him and one spot open in the pen why not put him there? You ever hear the phrase “you cut off your nose to spight your face”? Thats what it would be if there is a spot open in the pen and instead joba goes to scranton at the end of camp. Plus cashman will not give up a draft pick to go get soriano. He already said they have no interest in getting any reliever that are placed on arbitration.

        • I think you would be cutting off your nose by not letting Joba learn how to be a starter, also why go through the whole year with innings limits to allow him to have no limits to put him in the pen and give him more limits?

Joba should go to Scranton! If he wants to learn to be a starter and that is where his value lies he needs to go to Scranton!

Soriano already accepted arbitration so that is done.

          • M-Three says:

One problem with your logic here, when has joba every said he wants to start? Everytime he has been asked about it joba has always responded by saying he doesn’t care. You know what, i think he does care. From one of the comments i heard he said during the playoffs told me all i need to know. He said “when i pitch in relief it is so easy for me. I don’t have to think, i just throw.” That should tell all you need to know about his mentality. Last year proved to me that he is a guy that feeds off emotions and wants to strike everyone out. The only place he will do that is in the pen. I guarantee not only will Joba be in the bullpen once the season starts but in about 3 or 4 years he will be the guy that takes over for mo.

I’LL MISS BrUNEY and won’t be surprised if he develops big time with them.He was quite effective for the Yankees before his Lisranc.
I understand we’re getting the Nat’s”first pick” in the upcoming rule 5 draft.Actually not bad to choose any player not protected.Good scouting could turn up a gem.

    • I really see no reason he would develop big with them… He’s about to be 28 and hasn’t pitched more than 50.0 IP in any season in his career yet! Those trends don’t usually change…

If the Yankees traded him for the first pick in the rule 5 that is very interesting! They must have a really specific player in mind and want to make sure they get the guy, I wonder who they are willing to commit a roster spot to all year?

I guess you didn’t see him before the injury, mowing guys down with a 96 mph heater and a developing breaking ball that made his heater very tough.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

I like Bruney too, but I doubt you see him turn into a big time closer with Washington. He just does not have the kind of consistency for that.

      • That is my point! I saw him mow guys down at 96 but I also saw him get injured every year of his career and have no command coming off of those injuries! Nothing about him this year points to him leaving that behind.

  10. EJ Fagan says:

I’m excited as hell for the first Rule V pick.

Time to see who we can pick…

  11. leftylarry says:

    Is that confirmed?
I heard it earlier on mIKE kAY.

  12. leftylarry says:

Figuring out who they want should be fun.

  13. Well the Nationals make more moves today and have signed Ivan Rodriguez to a 2 year deal to be their catcher…. Not sure what he has left but a lineup with him behind the plate (he can still play D) and Adam Dunn and Zimmerman could be pretty OK. Pitching is still going to be their major set back but maybe if the big S can get called up and be the big man in the rotation (I doubt it) maybe they can finish better than last.
