Burnett to start Game 5
Via Marc Carig (Star-Ledger), we learn that A.J. Burnett will be the Yankees starter for Game 5 (on short-rest). During his career, Burnett has started 4 games on 3 days rest and has won all 4 of them. In those 4 starts, he has a 2.33 ERA over 27 innings and a 2.40 K/BB ratio. That’s awfully impressive. Hopefully, in Game 5, that’s the A.J. we’ll see (it’s the same guy who started Game 2).

I’ll take the same guy that pitched in game #2, he was good that night.
Yeah but he could just as easily be the guy who gave up 4 runs with out ever getting an out in the first inning against the Angels… Burnett is already unpredictable, on short rest I would think you can only expect more inconsistency. I saw his numbers on short rest but those weren’t that recent, it isn’t a big sample size, he is a guy with a big injury history and he doesn’t have a CC type body frame to suggest this won’t affect him. The biggest part to me is going to come mentally though, he already has problems with confidence I just hope he doesn’t feel early fatigue or something in the start and doubt his stuff.
We can try to show our optimism with AJ. One thing I learned many many years ago; Make your plains and prepare for the unexpected, once the first shot is made, things ALWAYS change…sometimes for the better. Let us all hope, AJ can man up for the game, I think he will.
AJ (and Joba) has the best stuff on this team (my opinion) he just needs something to click in his approach or his head. I have no clue what is wrong with those two guys, they both have talent but, something is missing.
It’s not “manning up” I’m worried about it’s the actual short rest of it all, pitchers get into rhythms and to pitch someone on short rest messes up that rhythm. With guys like Sabathia it doesn’t matter because he is mentally and physically stronger than most out there but AJ isn’t that way. He has proven to be both mentally and physically weak at times and I think you are pressing fate to pitch him on short rest. I hope he does great but I would temper my expectations!
Joba does not have the best stuff on the team and I totally disagree with that statement! Burnett doesn’t throw 91 MPH he is just inconsistent and mentally gets in his won way Joba has no stuff right now at all! He’s not off his game at times and still throwing good stuff he is learning how to unpitch… Chamberlain is throwing 93 as a reliever, he has no bite on his slider and it doesn’t break from the zone to out of the zone anymore, his Change up is no where near as good without the change in speed from the fastball to change like before and he can’t control his curve at all.
Right now Joba has some of the worst pure stuff on the team! At this point I believe it has almost everything to do with his delivery change and if that is the case and he is throwing as hard as he can and taking away the “violence” in his delivery took away his mustard Joba may never have the kind of stuff he had again!
I was against it when it worked and CC won the game (with 10 runs and he struck out maybe 1?) and I’m even more against it now.
Terrible decision for Girardi to go 3 consecutive short rest pitchers with a 2-1 lead.
If CC comes up short tonight, you go short rest Burnett against well rested Lee and then you need Pettitte, I believe short rested again to get you a 7th game.Horrible planning, even if it works out.
Larry trying to go to strike outs isn’t going to work! CC didn’t struggle and in fact he used less pitches while walking less in the same amount of innings as his first start! Sabathia changed what he was trying to do in the 2nd game against the Angles and was pitching to contact trying to get the hitters to hit into outs and save his pitch count for deep in the game. He also didn’t win because of 10 runs he won with 10 runs but he complete 8 in less than 110 pitches and only gave up 1 run in doing so!
Larry you have lost your mind! If you don’t go with Sabathia tonight you have to go Gaudin Vs Blanton and that’s a crap shoot either way and you have to pitch at least 4 innings out of the pen if not more. Game 5 would be CC Vs Lee and you could very well lose that game as Lee beat him the first game if you lose both your now down 3-2 going back to New york and in game 6 you would have Burnett Vs Pedro if you win you go to game 7 where Pettitte has to win the series against Hamels!
That doesn’t make sense to guess around 3 starts… You have to pitch CC 3 games in this series if it goes 7 the fact that you don’t see this means you don’t care about winning you care about bitching! It’s pretty much all you ever do, bitch about CC, bitch about Girardi, Melky, Burnett, Posada and every and anyone on the team! It’s getting old and half the time your bitching makes no sense!
The only option for tonight was starting CC Sabathia, we have the chance to to take the commanding 3-1 lead or slip to 2-2 and it;s anyone series! I don’t agree with pitching Burnett or Pettitte on short rest (mostly Pettitte) but tonight the choice was made for us! You have to step on their throats and pitch the ace in this game!
Also CC is well rested and ready to go and on top of that he asked for this start!
Having the best “Stuff” means they DO have it. It doesn’t mean that they are using it well. AJ and Joba have very good pitches, when they have their normal game…if not, Joba throws FB at 91-92, slider with very little movement etc.
Both AJ and Joba can be over-powering when they pitch normal, both of them have the stuff and have improved in the play-offs.
By this time next year…after they revamp Joba…both AJ and Joba along with CC and Andy(?) will let the Yanks have a steady very good 4 man rotation.
One bad bad bad season for a guy of Jobas age doesn’t mean he hasn’t got it, it means he hasn’t gotten it yet. With much work in the off season and maybe time in AAA, he’ll be back.
