The Yankees decided to take 8 relievers, a move likely conditioned upon the fact that the Twins have a number of good lefties, prompting the Yankees to carry two lefthanded relievers. This is very similar to the roster that I suggested last week, with Cervelli replacing Guzman being the only digression. Being that the Yankees decided to have Jose Molina start at least one game, a third catcher probably makes more sense than a pinch runner. Guzman would have been a nice luxury to have, but I am fine with carrying Cervelli and the extra arm.

What do you think? Would your roster look different?

That’s pretty much exactly the roster I want. You need 2 lefties against the Twins and the 3 catchers gives you versatility with Jorge’s bat.

The only question I have is carrying both Joba and Gaudin over Guzman. Aren’t those two a bit redundant? I like it, but I can’t put my finger on why this way is better.

I think, and I could be wrong but I think Joba will be the set up man to Hughes used in the 7th with a leas and Gaudin will be a righty match up guy. I like both Joba and Gaudin on the roster for the ability to strike out righties but I agree Guzman is a guy who would bring some versatility to the running game and most likely Cervelli won’t even see much playing time. I would Imagine if the Yankees make it to the ALCS then you would see Guzman then.

Joba is also better against lefties then is Gaudin. If the Yanks are starting Melky they don’t need two fast guys off the bench but, I would have started Brett. I still like Brett over Melky, he makes pitchers nervous.

          • The other Chris H says:

With Melky starting you get more power and then you can choose the spots to put Brett on… If Brett goes 0-4 you lose both Melky (who isn’t good off the bench) and Brett’s speed late in games. I like starting Melky if for no other reason than you can choose when to bring in Brett, it’s a guaranteed stolen base compared to Matsui or someone on base.

What?!?!? No Edwar??? We’re on thin ice here…
