Yeah, I don’t know about you, but I’d say that new guy did pretty well for himself.
Sabathia and the Yankees were also helped by some pretty poor fundamental play by the Angels–the one play we’ll remember years from now was a Luis Castillo-esque dropped pop up (well, not so much dropped as no one bothered to try to catch it) by Eric Aybar that directly led to the Yankees 2nd run in the first.
The two runs were all that the Yankees–and Sabathia–would need.
Sabathia was helped by solid fundamental play and good defense on the part of his team, and the Yankees simply outplayed the Angels.
The Yankees did not get a ton of offense, but they had enough to take advantage of the Angels’ misplay. Tonight was only the second time ever there had been a game at the new Yankee Stadium without a home run, but the Yankees were able to tack on the two insurance runs to provide the extra cushion everyone likes so much.
The best moment of levity came late in the game, when FOX aired a conversation between Joe Girardi and Tim McClelland, the home plate umpire, as Girardi went to bring in Mariano Rivera. Rivera, who has more postseason saves than anyone else in history. You may have heard of him. It went something like this:
Girardi: We’re bringing Rivera.
McClelland: Who?
Girardi: This new guy we got.
McClelland: Up from AAA?
Well, for what it’s worth, that real new guy, CC, was worth every single cent tonight.
The Yankees have now taken a 1-0 series lead against Los Angeles, and did not have to worry about wasting a CC start because of the weather.
On that note, the forecast for tomorrow is very murky indeed and via the FOX broadcast, a makeup game, if needed would be played Sunday afternoon, about 4.30 (no way Fox is not broadcasting the Saints-Giants early game).
This would throw a wrench in the pitch-CC-on-3-days-rest plan, but since the Yankees will now not be on the verge of elimination in game four, there is a little more leeway.

I thought I heard the ump say “Mo?” as in asking if it was Mo and Girardi’s response was like no this new guy, but that could just be me.
Yankees did a good job, they left some runs on the bases and they didn’t punish Lackey as hard as they could have but it’s a good start! The D was great especially Damon on his dive and CC and Tex on the bunt throw out of Hunter!
Sabathia did great and yet he still has a lot of room to improve and do better in which is a really good sign because he should only improve in every start, if it does rain CC pitches game 5 huh?
My prediction for AJ’s line…
7 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 ER and 8 Ks.
I’ll go with your prediction on AJ. I think that he is going to be pumped, after getting his first postseason start out of the way.
Also, Instead of the whole world analyzing the projected three CC starts, I think some discussion should be started on who Girardi sends out there if the Yanks are up 3-0. will he send out Gaudin or CC, on short rest?
Remember, CC will always be available on normal rest, for a game 5 if Gaudin loses. On the other hand, would Girardi be pilloried for NOT sending CC out, on short rest, for the sweep?
If the Yanks are only up 2-1, I think then, it’s CC on short rest, no question.
I’m going with a 6-2 NYY W tonight. I’d have to agree with that line for AJ as well although I was feeling a one run from him and one from the bullpen. This, assuming he’s OK with the cold. He did OK in Toronto so we shall see.
That’s a good point I forgot he has played in cold conditions before so he should be mostly fine with it by now.
I think Lackey’s getting a little to much credit in this game and he should have gotten 3 ERs as far as I am concerned… John was OK but he had little to no fastball control for the first 3 innings and his curve ball was god awful until the 4th and he ended up with over 100 pitched right as the 5th inning.
And it (the 100) could (should) have been worse. In Jorge’s first 3 ups, in which he was 0′fer, he saw 4 pitches. WTFO? Pouting about not starting every game?
I actually do worry about Jorge’s mind set because he isn’t starting every game but if he lets that effect his game then we have bigger problems than him and AJ.
