The Arizona Fall League season began today, and 6 Yankees, playing for the Surprise Rafters, were part of a 17-4 shellacking of the Peoria Javelinas.

  • Ian Kennedy started, giving up a run on 2 hits in 4 innings of work, with 4 strikeouts.
  • Zach Kroenke gave up a run on a hit and a walk in 1 inning of work.
  • Grant Duff gave up a hit in a scoreless inning of work.
  • Austin Romine, catching and hitting 5th, was 1 for 4 with a walk.
  • Brandon Laird, playing 3rd and batting 7th, was 4 for 6 with a strikeout.
  • Colin Curtis was 3 for 6 with a double.

Of these guys, Kennedy and Romine are the 2 most important prospects to follow.  I am hoping that Kennedy’s recovery from aneurysm surgery is going well, and that Romine will be able to handle the higher level pitching of the AFL.  I expect Brandon Laird to put up some impressive power number in the hitter-friendly league.  Mike Dunn is also on the team, and he’ll probably get plenty of opportunities to pitch.

It’s great that we have Pitch F/X for the fall league this season. Kennedy was sitting around 89-90 and hit 92. Kroenke hit 91 a few times but was sitting 89-90, and Grant Duff topped out at 94.5.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Kennedy can do at this level. I know he’s just there to build up arm strength, but he could really dominate.
