The Yankees are one win away from their first trip to the World Series since 2003. Toeing the rubber for New York is A.J. Burnett, who in two postseason starts has pitched about as well as you could ask for out of your number two starter in the playoffs (12.1 IP, 6H, 3R, 7BB, 10K and a 2.19 ERA). Facing Burnett is John Lackey, who has basically pitched as well as if not better than Burnett (13 IP, 13H, 4R, 4BB, 7K and a 1.38 ERA) despite having given up one more earned run and seven more hits.
As good as Lackey is, the Yankees appeared to be awakening from their offensive slumber on Tuesday, and they certainly have the ability to plate some runs against the Angels’ erstwhile ace. I expect A.J. to be stingy with hits again, and if he can limit the free passes, he should turn in another strong outing.
The bottom line is that the Yankees need to take care of business and close the ALCS out tonight. It’s winning time, boys. Just five more and you can bring it home for George.
