If I’m CC, I’m doing my best to keep the bats of Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer (.307/.363/.651 line against lefties this season) in check. That obviously goes without saying, though. Enjoy the game—it should be a fun one.

LET’S GO YANKEES!

    Let’s go Yaaaannnks!!

  2. Tom Gaffney says:

    that looked inside, no?

  3. The other Chris H says:

Robby turns one of the best double plays in baseball.

  4. Tom Gaffney says:

That double play looms large right now

  5. Tom Gaffney says:

Twins clearly sitting on the fastball up and away yet Jorge keeps calling it. Mix it up, Posada.

  6. Tom Gaffney says:

Wake up Jorge! Run after that ball

    • The other Chris H says:

Molina’s glove isn’t look so bad after all, but seriously he really has been behind the plate all year sleeping on blocking pitches, he barely tries.

  7. The other Chris H says:

CC doesn’t have the velocity I thought he would today, he can get by with out it but he needs to end this inning before he throws 70 pitches in 3 innings.

    2-0 Twins…

    • Tom Gaffney says:

He’s 94-95 on the tbs gun every time I’ve looked. Not sure what you mean unless I’ve missed some pitches

      • Tom Gaffney says:

checked with Gameday – he’s 94-95 all night – exactly what he always throws.

        • The other Chris H says:

I checked with Gameday and saw 92-93 in the first round, and I also said I expected him to throw more around 94-96 instead of 94 occasional 95.

          • The other Chris H says:

I also never meant he was throwing well below average, he was throwing a few 92′s and a few 93′s but I was just expecting one if his A+ velocity nights. I know you know what I mean, he has had games where he was 95+ all night and reaching 98 late in games that’s what I expected.

      • The other Chris H says:

HE was throwing 92-93 to start the game and it started creeping up after Orlando Cabrera. I also figured he might be a little charged up tonight and be throwing more in the 96 range but he looks to be building up so the best is yet to come.

  8. Tom Gaffney says:

Crowd is silent – wtf? Get some chants going, folks. Is it just the tv feed?

  9. The other Chris H says:

    Captain clutch!!!

  10. bumbler says:

    yea Jeter!

  11. Tom Gaffney says:

    tie ball game! Capn’ Jetes!

  12. Tom Gaffney says:

Alex overeager – swinging at two terrible, terrible pitches – c’mon Alex – patience

    • The other Chris H says:

Yeah but at the same time he is seeing a lot more pitches than in post seasons past so he may be a little jittery but not as much as before, he’ll shake it off in his next at bat.

  13. The other Chris H says:

Alex is seeing a lot of pitches so Duensing doesn’t have anything he hasn’t seen at this point I call a HR during his next at bat.

  14. The other Chris H says:

Nice hustle by Cano! I really didn’t know if he could score on that one, good call!

  15. The other Chris H says:

Alex comes through with a 2 out RBI, it wasn’t the HR I called but it also wasn’t a situation that you want Arod swinging for the fences just get a hit and get the RBI.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Yeah, great job by him staying within himself.

      • The other Chris H says:

That could really open the flood gates for Alex too, getting a 2 out RBI in a big situation in the middle of the game in game 1 could mean real good things all post season.

  16. The other Chris H says:

Hideki pounds one to CF and this one is getting bleak for the Twinkies.

  17. The other Chris H says:

Cano looks like he has been trying to pull everything and hit the big HR all night, if he starts trying to do that he could struggle this post season. Girardi needs to talk to him after the game about not trying to be the “power hitter” and just go out and go with the ball.

  18. The other Chris H says:

That’s at least an out at 2nd if he doesn’t put his foot in front of the ball…

  19. The other Chris H says:

Great at bat by the O-Cab but Hughes ended up winning in the end, I don’t understand why he doesn’t use the knuckle curve more in relief I know he has the fastball but 10 pitches 9 fastballs and one slider, why not one curve?

    • Tom Gaffney says:

I tend to agree. I think the philosophy is that they can’t catch up to Phil’s heat, anyway, so why give them a chance. He’s mixed it up in the eighth more with some nice cutters but a nasty curve every once in a while would really keep them honest.

      • The other Chris H says:

Especially in at bats where you have a guy just fouling off fastball after fastball just throw the old spike curve and get the swing and miss.

  20. The other Chris H says:

What a tough night for Mark, 0-4 with a force and a double play.
EDIT: Yet conversley Alex is coming through with a pretty big night as he leads off his post season with two 2 out RBI hits.

  21. Tom Gaffney says:

Coke over marte, Joba, or D-Rob, here, huh? Not sure if I’m in love with this.

    • The other Chris H says:

Coke is the main lefty in the pen and Kubel is a power hitting lefty makes perfect sense to me… Robertson walks to many to bring him in with someone on and Joba might as well be saved for the righty when you have coke.

  22. Tom Gaffney says:

JoeG loving this ability to mix and match with a fully rested pen and a day off tomorrow. Got a little lucky as that last shot off Coke was a bullet. Let’s see what Joba will do. This is fun.

  23. The other Chris H says:

I wonder if Joba is coming in to go an inning and a third or just the third to get some playoff pitches under his belt? Should be interesting to see his velocity in the pen with no limits on anything…

EDIT: Well he didn’t throw 100 as the announcer claimed he was in between innings but 95 isn’t bad… I think it does make the case for him protecting his arm that he is only throwing 95-96 out of the pen now when before he was consistently 97-99. Everyone just seems to go along with the drop from 99 to 91 as a starter and I don’t… Yeah he should drop to 93-95 and hit 96-98 on occasions that call for it but 91?

  24. leftylarry says:

Has Jorge EVER gone up the ladder on a batter, EVER?
If he decides a guy can’t hit the ball low and away and the guy fouls off 4 pitches low and away, he stays low and away until the guy finally gets a hit.He rarely comes inside in that situation. He’s a predictable catcher who can’t block the wild pitch and lately only calls fastballs with a man on first who is a steal possibility.
    Go Yankees.

I thought Girardi over managed the bullpen today and got away with it with the sizable lead.
IF Hughes didn’t get Orlando there, he has to face Mauer with men on base.I think CC would have been the better choice for one more out there. That way if Orlando Cabrera gets on base, CC faces Mauer which IMO is a better play there.
I could argue it the other way too I guess.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Disagree. You try and get the guy in front of you, and Hughes was a better bet against Cabrera, and it is not like he can’t get Mauer.

      • The other Chris H says:

Not to mention Orlando had two hits already off of Sabathia going into that at bat and he had started to lose a little, best bet was to go with Hughes.

      • bumbler says:

Phil Coke was warmed up in that inning and I was worried Girardi would bring him in to face Mauer if Cabrera got on. Mauer had two or three homers off of Coke this year which I think would have made it a terrible move in this situation. Glad Hughes got Cabrera.

        • Moshe Mandel says:

Coke was warming for Kubel, just in case it got that far. That’s exactly how it played out in the next inning.

  25. The other Chris H says:

Bringing in Mo with a 5 run lead shows how important Joe thinks this game is, he doesn’t want to waste a single game I like the move, especially with the day off tomorrow.

  26. leftylarry says:

Moshe Mandel: Disagree. You try and get the guy in front of you, and Hughes was a better bet against Cabrera, and it is not like he can’t get Mauer.

I don’t think I want Phil Hughes pitching to Mauer with 2 men on base very often.Like i said though, i could argue it the other way too.

    • The other Chris H says:

Why not? I’m not necessarily arguing your point but what’s the argument for not letting Hughes pitch to Mauer?

Phil Hughes has faced Mauer 3 times and Mauer has been sat down each time, and besides from Gaudin (0-5) and Robertson (0-2) no one else on the Yankee team has kept Mauer with out a hit this season.
