From MiLB.com:

Yankees catcher Austine Romine was named Player of the Year and Twins right-hander Dave Bromberg was voted Pitcher of the Year on Monday as the Florida State League revealed its 2009 postseason All-Star team.
Romine, following in the footsteps of former Tampa catcher Jesus Montero, put up solid numbers for the Yankees behind the plate, hitting .273 with 12 homers, 70 RBIs and 11 stolen bases through 115 games. He was named Player of the Week on June 8 after batting .300 with 17 RBIs in 26 games in May.

Romine had a line of .273/.322/.435, with the SLG number being significantly higher than the league average. He also notched a 32% CS rate. Romine has taken a step forward as a prospect this season, and Montero’s move to AA facilitated Romine’s further growth. Montero likely would have nabbed this award if he had remained in the FSL, but it is gratifying to see another Yankee position player prospect get some recognition. He may be the player who takes the catching mantle from Jorge Posada.

    Moshe,

This is fantastic and is contrary to my gut feeling that Romine slipped in the second half of the year. Incidentally, I have always understood the player that started slow and then picked up steam (many of the Yankees). However, I am perplexed by a young player, like Melky, that routinely falls backwards in the second half. I understand that pitchers get smarte or that players get tired. Both of these can be true for Romine. But whats Melky’s excuse? Is this ore common than I think.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

The thing is, Melky actually has exactly even first half and second half career splits. It is only the last two years that he has done the second half swoon thing. I really cannot explain it, and maybe it is just random.

I think he starts to press himself at the plate and is really looking to finish the year strong and win a a starting job for good.
