Vernon Wells is hitting like it’s 2003.
Yeah to bad it’s at the end of a dead season and no pressure is on him anymore…
I wouldn’t call it a “mess” I would call it a wake up call for a team that was starting to get comfortable at the wrong time.
I would have like to have seen Franky get a start behind the plate here but just because I like the kids spark and energy on the field.
Yankees have the early 2-0 lead and Gaudin has looked decent through 2 innings pitched. I really am impressed with what Eiland and Girardi have done since acquiring Gaudin he has really been quite a bit better pitcher than he ever was with the cubs or Padres and they both have much bigger parks than we do, he could be a real weapon against right handed bats in the playoffs and going forward in the pen/spot starter in the regular season.
Gaudin was a good pickup. Props to Brian Cashman, too.
Yeah but from what was said when we got him his change kind of sucked from what I read and now it is a pitch he throws with confidence, I think Eiland has done a better job this year than any Yankee pitching coach has done in a while.
No balls are going out towards left center tonight unless Arod can muscle one out because the wind is keeping well hit balls in the park.
How are you going to let Joe Batista blast a bomb on you?
Bautista has some power, I remember when he went on a HR tear with the Pirates a few years back.
Cool… Gaudin hit in the arm… I really hope we don’t have to throw 7 innings out of the pen…
2nd and 3rd no outs pretty sure Gaudin can’t get out of this with out at least one run scoring.
EDIT: I may be wrong after that extremely good extremely lucky play by Chad.
Nope I wasn’t wrong tie game but 2 outs, so he has a chance to leave the inning with out giving up the tie.
With help from a very good play by Alex we do get out of the jam tied… Now lets go offense!
Yea, seriously. With Tallet out, I don’t know if we should be happy or sad. He was getting knocked around a bit in the first inning.
Yeah but we have owned pretty much that entire bull pen with the exception of League and you should always fear the mutton chops man…
I said this on twitter yesterday but Brandon League is the most emo pitcher in the game. He should be living in Seattle.
haha Yeah I can see it but he has some really electric stuff and is still fairly young for how long he has been around.
Anyone think Girardi is in the running for manager of the year? He has done a great joba with the bull pen and he manages people better than any manager I have seen in a while.
Oh snap, I bet Teixeira was like, “F-CK UZR,” when he made that play.
For everyone who thinks Nick Swisher is as valuable as Mark Teixeira on defense then just look at that play he just made and not just the act of catching it but the heads upness to realize you have only 1 out and the go ahead run at 3rd.
TEX > SWISH in all facets of the game!
Nah, Swisher is still more valuable defensively. It’s easier to find an average defensive first baseman than it is to find an above average right fielder who can play average to above average defense in left field (while having some experience at first, too).
You hurt my brain….! Tex is a way above average first baseman despite whatever useless range number you want to post and Swisher is an average right and left fielder and an average first baseman.
If you were starting a team and I was starting a team I would more than gladly let you have Swisher and I’ll take Tex and we’ll see who gets further.
You are judging Swisher vs an average first baseman Tex is a legitimate gold glove top 5 in baseball defensive first baseman with one of the best arms at the position.
Swisher is an above average RF. UZR is more than range, it factors arm, range, errors, for instance.
You only ever want to take into count the fact that Tex has limited range and act like he’s 100 years old and can’t move… He isn’t the best going to his left but going to his right he has plenty enough range to make all the spectacular plays he does, he also has a terrifically strong and amazingly accurate arm to compliment his excellent glovemanship to make all the picks out of the dirt. Hell the guy has won 2 or 3 games single handedly based on his defense and amazing plays… Swisher makes average plays but he makes them with difficulty and fouls up some of them in really bad ways however he never makes the spectacular plays, you can find anyone to play RF as well or better than Swisher but it would almost impossible to do the same with Tex… If you don’t see that get lost in the numbers and forget what your eyes see and at that point you stop being a fan.
Nah, Tex is average with UZR. He does a lot of things well, he’s not a bad defender by any means (and his scoops are top notch). He has excellent vertical range, too. I’ve seen Swisher get better and better in the OF every day. His arm is great, too, now that he’s throwing with more accuracy. I think it’s more valuable to have a very strong RF than it is an average 1B, though. The Yankees hid Giambi at first base for a reason. It’s not a defense first position. Neither is RF, but I don’t think Giambi could ever play there. It goes to show you how difficult RF can be when compared to 1B.
I’m not going any further on this conversation with you because you are just going to make me mad because Tex is no where near average it doesn’t matter if it is a main D position he is still one of the best at it.
Swisher has an average arm at best and that is being nice because when he doesn’t throw with accuracy he has a below average arm! Swisher is not a good defensive RFer and Tex isn’t average first base if you don’t want to actually watch games to decide who is good I feel sorry for you… Go sleep with your UZR…
Yankees are starting to figure camp out and square up the ball just nothing to show for it yet… and I say yet…
They’ll get something going.
Terrible error for Jeter after a really good play by Jeter ironically but Gaudin picks him up and the game is still tied, lets go Molina…
That is my only real problem with Girrdi he never brings the D in to cut off the run at the plate, if you do in that situation we still have a tie game. He is way to confident in the offense to always come back, yeah you have a team that can score but why constantly burden them to have to score more runs. Not one time this year with a guy on third less than two outs and no one on first has he brought the D in, he concedes the run at third every single time… why?
The statement “Nah, Tex is average with UZR” is just so infuriating to me you can’t understand… watch the games, Tex makes at least one great defensive play a game and never fouls up the easy ones, he plays the position of first base better than 90% of players in the league I know I wouldn’t want fat Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder over him manning first, in fact the only one I would want over Tex is Pujols. Get over UZR anf watch the game and realize that you are watching one of the top 5 first baseman in the game of baseball today, if you don’t agree name them but I doubt you can come up with 5 better than Tex.
Tex had two plays tonight that could have been made. He is very good, but you are blotting out his mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes you could point that out on anyone but at what point is he average?
He is one of the top 5 first baseman in baseball, you and Chris keep trying to say he isn’t but have yet to list 5 better first baseman that start every game for there team at first base…
Guys that are better defensively?
Well, you can go with:
1. Albert Pujols
2. Kendry Morales
3. Derek Lee
4. Justin Morneau
5. Kevin Youkilis
And when I said Tex is average with UZR I meant that he’s not terrible. People automatically hear he has a negative score and think he’s awful, but that’s not the case. He’s average. Also, I watch the games, Chris. That’s usually the case when you write about the Yankees, every day.
I would argue that Tex is a better defensive first baseman than Derek lee and that Youk is better than Lee and Morneau, just face the fact he’s not an average first baseman… Think what you want but your wrong…
I don’t care what your UZR shows he is an above average and great first baseman…
I understand what you mean when you say average with UZR and you just said “he’s not terrible” Which is insinuating he isn’t terrible but he isn’t good and your dead wrong he is one of the 5 best in AL and I would say one of the 5 best in the MLB.
You really have no credibility when you say Tex is average…
And saying, “he’s one of the 5 best in baseball,” with no legitimate evidence to back up your argument makes you the number one authority on this subject? I’ve offered evidence to suggest that Teixeira is a solid, average first baseman. What evidence do you have that shows he’s one of the 5 best in the game? Have you watched Derek Lee play every game? How about Youkilis, Morneau, hell, even Miguel Cabrera. You haven’t watched any of them and yet, UZR has (it’s not a person, but you get what I mean). My evidence trumps your so-called evidence.
“I don’t care what your UZR shows he is an above average and great first baseman…”
Sounds like someone is in denial….or just run out of argument points to make so he’s gone to the “I watch the games I know what I’m talking about argument”.
First of all you I have watched Derek Lee and Kevin Youk quite a bit this year… My roommate is a Red Sox fan so I watch almost all of there games at least in parts and I have watched quite a few Twins games as well so how can you say you know who I have watched at all?
What a clutch HR from Godzilla! He has really come up big in the second half of the year for us, you could almost say he is the MVP of the second half of the season for the Yankees.
I’m going to miss him more than any Yankee in recent memory (when he becomes a FA). I’m already looking forward to his return to Yankee Stadium with the Mariners :)
Mariners huh? I don’t know if they can afford to bring him in because I think Griffey is coming back next year at least for one year and I don’t think it would be smart to have two left handed DHs with little ability in the outfield anymore.
If they bring Griffey back, it better be as a pinch-hitter. He’s done.
Yeah he isn’t good anymore but he would be the starting DH… They still need to seel tickets and Griffey Jr does that…
It’s true, he does sell tickets. I lived out there earlier this year and people did rejoice when he returned.
The guy is a god in the Seattle area and I know they want to see him one more year and it looks like he is having fun and everyone knows the Mariners aren’t competing for a WS next year just a playoff berth so Griffey won’t hurt them that badly and his enerfy will help.
With that last HR Matsui’s batting average is .280 which means all but 3 of the “main” hitters in our line ups have above .280 batting averages now… Only Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera and Gardner are below .280 and Gardner and Melky are batting .275+
1 SS Jeter .330
2 LF Damon .282
3 1B Tex .286
4 3B Arod .287
5 DH Matsui .280
6 C Posada .281
7 2B Cano .320
8 RF Swisher .257
9A CF Cabrera .278
9B CF Gardner .276
I know Franky wants pie… now get it done!
HE GOT IT DONE WITH A SINGLE!
Cervelli’s the man! He’s been great whenever he’s been around.
No body in the world is going to feel better than Frankie before he goes to sleep tonight!
Great night for Cervelli and the Yankees.
I think he earned himself at least one of the next two starts while Posoda is gone.
Technically “the other chris” does have data which proves what his eyes see…
http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/sort/zoneRating
Yeah dude I am in denial haha please give me a break… since when was this your argument and since when did you bring any evidence to the table at all? Since when do you ever bring anything to the table? You almost always piggy back off either Chris or Mo and never have your own thoughts on a situation.
UZR is one of the most overrated statistic in all of baseball
1 Carlos Pena TAM 133 129 1155 1136 1055 71 10 102 .991 8.77 2.922
2 Derrek Lee CHC 127 127 1128 1086 994 87 5 103 .995 8.63 2.910
3 Mark Teixeira NYY 138 136 1198 1171 1121 47 3 104 .997 8.77 2.909
4 Justin Morneau MIN 123 123 1072 1045 952 90 3 88 .997 8.75 2.907
An according to ED’s statistics from MLB I am closer to being right saying he is top 5 than Chris saying he is average…
My main problem with what you are saying Chris is that you have Tex as an average first baseman compared to who? He makes one great play a game at least an average 1B man makes a “Great play” every few games and fouls up a lot of regular plays, sure Tex has a gaf here and there for sure but he makes all the difficult plays, he makes all the picks, he has a huge accurate arm which is vastly underrated on a first baseman and he has pretty good lateral range especially going to his right which is the most important play anyway to cut off singles up the hole. I watch the guy every day (As well as many other teams around the league on a daily basis) and while he isn’t the best I would guarantee he is top 5 in the AL and top 10 in MLB and I would say closer to the top 5 in the MLB than lower on the top 10 list.
Tex has 3 errors on the year and only Casey Kotchman, Adam LaRoche and Lyle Overbay have less and Kotchman no longer starts because he is on the Sox. Tex has the third best zone rating in all of baseball for first baseman and he has the 5th best fielding percentage in the league and Casey Kotchman has the number one spot and again he isn’t a starter anymore so he has had less opportunities since the all star break than the others. Does he have weaknesses? Yes but they aren’t so big and so glaring that it makes him average he is far above average Russell Branyan is an average first baseman, Ryan Howard is an average first baseman, a big slower guy with little glove work and no arm to speak of. Tex may not be the best at everything but he can do everything a first baseman is asked to do well.
The fact that he has picked up the Yankees infield to be one of the better infields in baseball when it comes to making routine plays shows how much impact he has had in the field and no average first baseman could do that.
