Game 146: Blue Jays @ Yankees
We have a vibrant community here at TYU, so, how about a game post?
Here are the lineups, courtesy of Pete Abraham (LoHud):
YANKEES (93-52)
Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Gardner CFPitching: RHP Sergio Mitre (3-2, 7.02).
BLUE JAYS (65-79)
Scutaro SS
Hill 2B
Lind DH
Wells CF
Overbay 1B
Encarnacion 3B
Barajas C
Bautista RF
Snider LFPitching: RHP Roy Halladay (14-9, 3.03).
In his last start against Toronto, Mitre gave up 9 ER over 4 1/3 IP. His line wasn’t helped by the Yankees’ poor defense, however. Prior to that rough outing, Mitre had pitched “fairly well” against the Jays this season. On August 10th, he gave up 3 ER over 5 IP while striking out 6 and on August 5th, Mitre gave up 3 ER over 4 1/3 IP while striking out 3. He won’t be lights out, of course (one can always hope), but I do expect him to be significantly better than he was when he gave up the 9 ER.
My prediction for the player of the game is… Jorge Posada.

I like the idea of game threads before the game, it gives a nice open forum to talk about the game at hand not the past or future as we so often get caught up talking about.
Thanks for the feedback, Chris. Yea, I think it’s a good idea. I usually tweet comments but I’m starting to hate twitter with a passion.
I stayed away from twitter the whole idea kind of seems too generic aka dumb for me… but yeah I usually throw a few posts on the game wherever relevant and when there is nothing relevant I go with the off topic area but a game thread really specifies the topic of conversation to the game which is good.
Agreed, Chris. Twitter is a strange thing. I don’t know what to make of it, really. Anyway, how about Fordham?
Just kidding!
Well it is FORDHAM! Great organization haha however on an unrelated note wasn’t that Matsui strike out the best sequence ever put together ever in the history of baseball not another sequence tops that one.
The pitch sequence? It was a nice display. Halladay is a beaaaast.
Leiter and Flaherty were swooning over how good Halladay’s pitch sequence was to Matsui throwing cutters in and a sinker middle to get the K.
Mitre looks good. Prior to tonight, although his ERA against the Jays is 6.53, his ratios against them are pretty good. 20 K’s in 20 2/3 IP with only 6 BB.
He really got screwed in that last start against the Jays, he made a lot of pitches that should have got him out of innings with out damage at certain times and limited damage at others, he was victimized by the defense for sure. I’ll give him credit he has to have been working his tail off because you can see improvements in his pitch location and variation in pitches since his first game up, he isn’t great but he is becoming serviceable as a 5th starter for this year which is really all he needs to be.
Yea, the defense didn’t do him any favors. He has improved, too.
Swisher!!! I love that guy.
Yeah I would take him on the Yankees if he was hitting .218 like last year just because of his attitude in the club house and the way he works pitches…
Does anyone ever feel like Brett Gardner in one year went from no patience to working the count like a veteran? I mean he doesn’t always hit but he fouls good pitches away and takes strikes pretty well for a first full year big league player.
Kevin Long has really helped him figure it out. He has always been a patient hitter (.414 OBP with Scranton in 2008)—that has continued—but he has also learned to be aggressive with good pitches. The kid can play.
It seems like before he would take two strikes and then swing at the ball for strike 3 but now he just keeps fouling off good pitches and stays away from balls until a pitch he can handle comes in the zone, it’s almost a Jeter like approach accept he doesn’t try to go the other way as much as Jete.
Speaking of Brett Gardner, after doing a good job working the count he got a bloop single (advancing to 2nd on throw )and the first RBI of the game, what a weapon off the bench come playoff time!
Definitely. He’s really the perfect bench player when you consider his defense, too.
I just wonder if his bat will ever develop to the point where he can be a lead off man, he has the patience but he needs to get his overall consistent swing together because he would have to hit .300 for it to be worth putting him at the top. If he could though he could be a great LF or CF lead off man with 40+ SB ability leading off for a power loaded line up!
I agree. I think he can definitely leadoff. It could happen, too, in the future.
That’s one of my favorite things about baseball. Pitch sequences are a lot of fun to watch.
Yeah or they can be frustrating haha watching Joba throw 5 sliders in a row can be a soul killer sometimes.
Haha, yea. Especially when none of them catch the plate.
Yeah, I don’t know why he doesn’t trust them to miss his slider at the end of the zone, he has to learn to make them at least fear the slider in the zone instead of “oh slider, that’s a ball” every time they recognize the pitch.
Alright, Chris. Nice stuff in here. I’m about to grab some dinner. I’ll be back a bit later, if you’re still around.
Well it looks like Dice K is doing well in his first start off the DL, if he comes back like Dice K the rest of the Year then the Red Sox rotation can match ours and possibly can be better depending on AJ and Joba.
Sabathia Vs Beckett
Burnett Vs Lester
Pettitte Vs Buchholz
Chamberlain Vs Dice K
Sabathia Vs Beckett
Burnett Vs Lester
Sabathia Vs Beckett
The Dice man went 6 innings with 3 walks and hits 5 Ks and no runs… he had velocity and kept the Angels scoreless, he could be a big factor in the playoffs the Yankees need to make sure Joba is right for the playoffs.
Well Mitre falls to the long ball not that usual for his runs to come off HRs over hits being laced together… Swisher should have at least had a better play than that, come on don’t go for it if you don’t know what your doing.
Yea, Swisher didn’t read that well. Bad inning for Mitre.
Bad night for Mitre off the long ball as Edwin just hit the 3rd HR in the game for the Jays, his sinker looks like it just stopped sinking as the game has gone on which is weird because usually sinker ballers start out high then drop down in the zone he reversed it.
Am I allowed to post here if I’m NOT named Chris H?
I don’t know but there are enough Steve’s to have a whole Chris/Steve conversation with like 5 people so why not…
No Steve’s allowed :)
Alex is so locked in right now it’s really amazing how much work he has put in and how much improvement he has made since they started giving him regular rest… I still say this guy is the MVP if you only consider what the award means because no one matters more to a playoff team right now than Alex except for Pujols. Hopefully he can keep up this swing and the hot streak once the playoffs come around, hopefully this year with CC and Tex he won’t think it’s all up to him to get the team to a WS.
EDIT: Close play at the plate but I’m glad Alex went for it there, nothing wrong with being aggressive and it really shows he is into the team winning.
If Mitre can keep it at 4 ER over 6 IP, I’ll be happy.
Good, God. As soon as I said that, Snider hammered one. Good night, Sergio.
4 HRs now for Mitre and the bad night just continues as the sinker will just not stop looking like Chein Ming Wang this season (I’m half kidding).
The Swisher Sweet almost got a big HR but a double isn’t bad at all… Man he has really been on fire lately at the stadium, him and Arod really helping no one notice Damon’s slump and Tex’s lack of power in September.
Alex is having a great season. If his defense were better, I’d throw his hat in the ring for MVP.
The hip has taken some range away from his but he has done a nice job doing what he can in the field…
The Yankees released Kevin Cash, not a huge surprise or that not worthy but for his name sake it will be sad to see him leave the box score in Scranton.
The Yankees released him about a week ago, I believe.
Marco Scutaro will be on the Red Sox next year. I’m calling it.
Don’t give them any ideas, that actually takes out the one give away in there line up…
Ha, exactly. He’s a good enough fielder to help them even if his offense regresses, which it will.
Anyone else see Cano as the perfect two hole hitter of the future? I have always thought he would end up in the 2 hole because of the contact he makes and the lack of strike outs he has. One reason I don’t mind seeing Damon go is because it opens up the 2 spot for Cano to be able to get on in front of Tex and Arod.
Where’s Brett Tomko?????? :)
Enjoying his time in an Oakland jail cell—and by jail cell, I mean the A’s.
It may be a cell but he threw a shut out so at least he is starting and pitching well, to bad he doesn’t know how to pitch on a winner.
Edwar has looked a lot more confident in his appearances since being called up and he is throwing it in the zone to set up the change, I don’t know what if anything he can be but he is at least realizing that the only chance he has to succeed is by throwing the fastball for strikes.
Edwar is the perfect example of why steroid users are assholes. This kid is the lankiest player I’ve ever seen and could use an extra 2-3 mph on his fastball. If he had that extra hair on his pitches, he’d be an elite reliever. It makes sense for him to use steroids more than anyone else I can think of.
However, he doesn’t, because it’s cheating. Therefore, steroid users are assholes. If Edwar Ramirez can stay away from the juice, everyone else should be able to, as well. That was a random tangent, but still, it makes sense.
Yeah but Edwar could also hit the wait room and get a little bigger, and you don’t know he doesn’t take steroids because it’s cheating he may not do it because he hates needles or he doesn’t want to get caught or simply because he isn’t that competitive. Usually the guys taking ‘roids have talent but there competitive nature takes over and they want the edge.
5 runs off the bull pen in 2 innings is a lot of work but they don’t really have a shut down pen most of them have decent stuff but they all can be hit…
Since we have been discussing LF/DH players we could sign in the off season I got one out of way left field for you to answer…
Would you trade for Josh Hamilton and if so what would you give up for him? He has been injured this year but you would assume next year should be a bounce back year for him with good numbers making him the perfect 5 hole hitter in Yankee stadium and great protection for Arod. Now the interesting part of this is that the Rangers only gave up Edison Volquez for him and I say only because he has surgery and is out for next year but he is also a huge part of their line up and would cost a pretty penny. I don’t know if it would cost one of the three (Joba, Hughes Montero) but I think I would be willing to include Hughes in a deal for Hamilton as long as we didn’t have to add a number of our higher up prospects in return but Montero and Joba are off limits to me right now because I still believe in Chamberlain’s ability as a starter. However I am not sure what it would take to get a deal done for him it would have to be a 6/5 for 2 or 5/4 for 1 kind of deal wouldn’t it?
Before the Rangers traded for him, I actually wrote that the Yankees should trade for him. It was a long time ago, but he was traded for Edinson Volquez days after I had written that.
If I was going to start somewhere I would start with players in the following deals an see where the Rangers wanted to go from there, I’m not saying these would be the trade that would need to be done but these would be my starting point for both scenarios concerning Hughes (one trading him one if you aren’t). I’m not even sure if they would be willing to listen but with him coming off of the year he having, the fact he probably won’t be re-signed by them in a few years and the fact they proved they can win with out him with Nelson as the main offensive player they may listen. They need pitching and pitching they can control if they want to keep winning because they have always had offense so I think you have to either offer Hughes as a big starter piece or you have to hope they go for the multiple pitching prospect approach and offer them a group like McAllister, Kennedy maybe a Nova or Brackman maybe, I suppose Melky may be somewhere in the discussion if they like him over Austin but why would they?
With Hughes
Phil Hughes, Austin Jackson, Juan Miranda, Ivan Nova and Zach Kroenke for Hamilton?
With out Hughes
Austin Romine, Austin Jackson, Zach McAllister, Juan Miranda and Kennedy for Hamilton?
Think of the dominate line up we would have… at least three 30+ HR guys a year and possibly three 40+ HR guys…
SS Jeter
DH Damon
1BTex
3B Arod
LF Hamilton
C Posada
2B Cano
RF Swisher
CF Cabrera/Gardner
Girardi is managing for the wildcard.
Get out! It’s Mitre starting against Halladay, who do you want in the game? Hughes and Mo? We are 7 up we have the luxury of having the 5th starter lose once in a while.
I mean seriously Mitre let 7 score in 5+ innings the bull pen was going to have to go at least 3 in this game and they are going 4 thanks to Mitre not getting an out in the 6th and the run that scored was only 1 of the 6 he allowed in the first 5 innings. You can’t win against Halladay if you take Mitre out after the third inning and pitch 6 innings with the pen to win one meaningless game agianst the Jays when you have another game tomorrow.
Great game coming up Saturday, September 19 in Seattle when CC Sabathia leads the Yankees Vs Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.
I’m glad Posada stepped up and told Carlson what not to do, He took exception to being thrown at and I don’t blame him.
Look at Posada locking up with Carlson after scoring…. AND THE BRAWL IS ON FOLKS HERE WE GO!
I couldn’t be happier about the Yankees season and am not concerned at all based upon one POS game, but I wish someone/anyone could explain to me what Sergio Mitre is still doing on the roster, which wouldn’t even begin to explain why the Yankees continue to let him actually start games. Anyone??? It defies reason. The guy has not done anything to earn that spot. It defies logic. I think the Yankees winning so often of late has somehow allowed this issue to stay under the radar. If you look at it though as an personnel decision that is not and should not be tied to anything else, it makes the entire organization look bad. But, winning as often as they are doing helps to mask such mistakes. I’d just like to see them finally acknowledge this one and move on.
Who would you have starting? Gaudin is already starting regularly and not coming out of the pen so you can’t say Gaudin, Ivan Nova is the only other option in the minors right now are you good with bringing in another sinker ball pitcher but one who has no MLB experience, probably wouldn’t turn out much better. He is on the team because no one is available anywhere…
You’re kidding me right? For starters, how about my 69 year old mother. The guy has a 7.63 era and a .340 BAA for crying out loud. Unless I’m confused about this, doesn’t the team have starters in AAA? Why not give Kei Igawa a turn or two. Anyone, yes anyone would be better than Mitre. If nothing else, the guy just doesn’t deserve to be drawing a MLB paycheck for the garbage he has produced.
At this point, while I like Mitre’s abilities, he hasn’t shown them much as of late. He has improved, but these past two starts are troubling (even if he was hurt by his defense in the previous outing). Giving up those homers tonight was bizarre. It was like watching batting practice. That can’t continue.
Yeah but the question still stands who replaces him? The only three pitchers you could call up and have start are Ivan Nova a sinker ball pitcher like Mitre, Jason Hirsh who has been in the minors for a while and was terrible with the Rockies and bad with the Astros (his numbers are worse than Mitre and he was in the NL) or you could call up Kei Igawa and I do not believe especially now that Yankee stadium gives up so many HRs that he would be better than Mitre, he would just give up as many HRs as Mitre did but every game, that experiment failed leave him be. Look at the triple A roster, no one with experience, no one any good with experience, he is a 5th starter we can stomach him losing to Roy Halladay two games in a row. I can understand why he gave up HRs to a degree, the Jays offense is pretty good and this is the 3rd or 4th start he has had against them in short time period so every hitter in the line up has seen him over 8 times.
Gardner!
Man did anyone see Shelley Duncan trying to choke Barajas? I couldn’t believe Shelley was so enthusiastic in a fight with a team he just joined! As long as no one is hurt I don’t think anything bad can come of this only good! They already gel real well with each other and this should bring them even closer together because no one pussed out and no one ran away from contact every player was either fighting for another player or trying to protect a team mate.
Shelley DUNCAN WAS totally SCREWED THIS SEASON BUT NOT AS BADLY AS IGAWA.He couldn’t be worse than Mitre.
Where was Shelley going to give good innings of work? He is a bad hitter with some pop he never got the call up because where was he going to play before September? I take Hinske, Hairston, Pena, Molina and Cervelli over Duncan on my roster.
Kei is terrible, he throws up in the zone with weak stuff expecting to get strike outs like he did in Japan and he never learned the American game, guy is a never was and never will be in the US, he will go back to Japan once his contract ends, god I hope that’s soon.
Since the probe can either image or scrape, but not both at the same time, the scientist is blind while manipulating the surface with the micro- scope probe. ,
