Discussion: Favorite Non-Star Yankees
Steve Lombardi has a very interesting post up, and I thought it would be fun to piggyback off it. He lists an entire roster of his favorite non-star Yankees, with most of the players being from before the 1994 season. The players can be former stars who no longer profiled as great players, or guys who were role players for their entire careers. Being that I only became a fan in 1992, my list will be wildly different from Steve’s. Chime in with your own lists in the comments:
C: Jim Leyritz, Frankie Cervelli
1B: Tino Martinez, second stint
2B: Mariano Duncan
SS: Erick Almonte
3B: Robin Ventura
DH: Chili Davis
MI: Jose Vizcaino
OF: Shane Spencer, Nick Swisher, David Justice, Shelley Duncan, Darryl Strawberry
UT: Luis Sojo
Pitchers: Melido Perez, Jon Lieber, Aaron Small, Shawn Chacon, Ramiro Mendoza, Scott Proctor, Graeme Lloyd, Doc Gooden, Tanyon Sturtze

- Most poker sites open to US players also provide online casinos accepting USA players. A good example of this is BetOnline.com, where you can play 3D casino games, bet on sports or play poker from anywhere in the United States.

Without a doubt for me it’s Homer Bush. I don’t know why he wasn’t a long term star.
Yes, Homer Bush !!..I also agree with Mike Stanley, a good hitting catcher who had the misfortune to miss the championships of ’96, ’98-’00, by playing with the Bombers in ’95 and ’97…Also TIM RAINES, who no one mentioned…and RON DAVIS…DAN PASQUA…and of course MIKE PAGLIARULO
I laughed when I saw this, because the first person I thought of was Hideki Irabu.
http://www.lennysyankees.com/2009/08/hideki-irabu-featured-yankee-card-of.html
Thought you would enjoy.
what about andy steinkewitz (sp)?
STANKIEWICZ…(STAN-ka-witz)
Grit is without a doubt my fave non-star…there are so few non-stars though. I remember being more excited about moments, like when Nelson came in for that one inning right when we got him back the last time, or when Leiter pitched lights out the last time we got him…I wanted Contreras to be good desperately, obviously that was mistake, oh I did love Aaron boone, mostly cuz he seemed so nice, I always wanted him to play well. And I was sure Ruben rivera would be great, bad call there.
C – Cliff Johnson, Dennis Werth
1B – Jim Spencer
2B – Damaso Marte
SS – Mike Gallego
3B – Eric Soderholm
DH – Dave Kingman
OF – Ruben Sierra (2nd stint), Garry Thomasson, Joe Lefebrve, Oscar Gamble, Gerald Williams
UT – Fred “The Chicken” Stanley, Luis Sojo, Jim Leyritz
SP – Orlando Hernandez, Shane Rawley, Phil Hughes, Ted Lilly, Aaron Small
RP – Dick Tidrow, Ron Davis, Dave LaRoche, Scott Proctor, Tanyon Sturtz
2B-Damaso MARTE ??!!!
do you mean Damaso GARCIA ??
yeah, I meant Garcia. thanks.
YES to Oscar Gamble, Jim Leyritz, Luis Sojo, “Chicken” Stanley, and Aaron “10-0″ Small
Something about El Duque just made him my favorite Yankee of all time, I never missed a Hernandez start… and Ruben Sierra on the offensive side.
Another player I loved was David “Boomer” Wells… guy just flat out knew how to pitch and you didn’t have to worry about his control at all.
This year its Aceves.
Aceves has been struggling for a while now, I hope he can get himself back on track for the playoffs but he has let his ERA balloon to a 4+, the fact that he can be hit pretty hard at times is why I never really see him being a good starter, he relies so much on accuracy and fooling batters that when he is off he can be really hit hard throwing 89 or 90.
Not fond of picking former stars (Darrl, Chili, Ventura, Doc, Tino v2) for these slots. They may not have been stars for what they did here, but they were indeed stars.
Some I had a fondness for:
Leyritz (so sad)
Ramiro Mendoza
Graham Lloyd
Jim Mecir
Randy Velarde
Gerald Williams
Shane Spencer
Luis Sojo
Mike Stanley
Scott Kamienicki
Bob Wickman
Mike Stanley (he counts? he our the starting C for 3 years)
This year it has to be Aceves and Swisher, with strong fondness for Pena and Cervelli. And Cody Ransom says I need to include him to get those photos back.
