Big news for all of us Yankee fans, Journal News Yankee beat reporter and author of the wildly popular LoHud Yankees blog just posted that he will be leaving for the Boston Globe. Turns out the rumors of his exit were true. Here’s his post:

So here it is: I’m leaving The Journal News after nearly 10 years and going to work for The Boston Globe.

I’ll be covering baseball — yes, the Red Sox — and blogging for Boston.com. The Globe approached me in August, right around the time my newspaper was going through some painful restructuring that you all heard about.

(snip)

Now I get a chance to move up again and live closer to my family. I’m the oldest child in my family and my mom and dad are retired. It means a lot to me to be around them and other members of my family. For years, they’ve been imploring me to come home and now seems like a good time.

I for one, will miss him. Pete’s a good guy, he was always great with answering e-mails about the team and added a link for our site the day I requested him to. People may quibble about his analysis (most of which was his opinion, like anyone else) but his news reporting was first rate and LoHud was the go-to blog for all breaking Yankee news. We take him for granted, but most beat writers aren’t half as dedicated as him, you don’t see the local newspaper’s Yankee beat reporters putting up posts at 2AM when some Yankee news breaks. But he did, and we as Yankee fans benefited from his diligence and dedication. We can only hope that his replacement does half the posting he did, and our loss is Boston’s gain. They will be getting the unfiltered, real time info we have come to take for granted.

Thanks Pete for the past 3 years, you did a great job and you will be missed.

Pete’s a good guy. He was very nice when I made a guest appearance on LoHud a year ago and he has always been accessible to those who read his work. It’s sad to see him go, but the Boston Globe is a good opportunity, obviously. I do wonder who will replace him, though. That should be a fun story to follow in the NYY blogging circuit.

Thank god he’s leaving. He’s was a sanctimonious prick who censored any criticism on his blog. He actually went to the point of deleting prior interviews that showed his Red Sox bias. His passive aggressive A-Rod bashing was pathetic. He’s going where he belongs.

  3. The other Chris H says:

HAHA I love that one man can bring up two totally different opinions ranging from “a good guy” to “a sanctimonious prick”. You have done your job as a blogger when you are loved and hated.

  4. Steve (the other one) says:

I didn’t always agree with him, but I sure will miss him. As you said Steve, his didication to the job will make him irreplacable,

He ran a good blog, but his trolling of rival blogs (with a fraction the readership) leaving silly comments under aliases was childish to say the least for a professional reporter. He would routinely annoy other websites about even the attributed posting of his work, going so far as to threaten legal action. And his stupid preoccupation with God Bless America rubbed me the wrong way.

I think Dave in MD had it exactly right. Pete was an a==hole. He banned me from his blog because I often disagreed with his opinion and I logged in to the comment section as “Pete’s Belly”. I won’t miss his biased reporting. If he didn’t like a player or even someone who read his blog, he could be vicious. I think he has self esteem issues. The blog will continue and my guess is that it will be better without him. Good riddance.

I agree with dave and X. No big loss.

  8. Greg says:

It’s no big loss, as long as they find a solid replacement. Love him or hate him, he updated the blog like a madman, which was much appreciated. I think we might look back someday and realize we took for granted how easy it was for us to obtain information about the everyday happenings of the team.
