George King (NY Post) notes that the Yankees are interested in the recently released Brad Penny and, according to Buster Olney (ESPN), the Yankees actually claimed Penny on waivers earlier this month, only to see the Sox pull him back. Penny can become a free agent on Monday and is looking to sign with a contender, so the Yankees could make sense. I don’t like him—he’s an NL guy—but he could be had for cheap and would probably put up a better line than Sergio Mitre.

100,000 dollars is all it would cost once he clears wavers and for a 5th starter he is actually a decent pitcher, remember the Red Sox were asking him to be a number 3 starter.
Unless he was tipping pitches like Smoltz was rumored, I don’t think he will help.
I’m surprised the Yankees weren’t in on Smoltz. We heard nothing about them being interested in him after he was given the Boston boot, yet here they are on Penny.
Penny is throwing 97 and Smoltz was hardly cracking 93 or 94 maybe Eiland thinks he can help Brad with his off speed stuff and they know they can count on Velocity and 6 innings out of the 5th starter. Really if he averages 6 innings and 4 ER with some games better some worse it’s worth it because Mitre isn’t going to give 6 consistently.
I’d still take 93-94 mph Smoltz over the straight fastball throwing Penny. Smoltz was bound to rebound. Penny is bound to remain mediocre.
