Well, I guess it’s 5 starts after today’s game against Texas.

From George King III (NY Post):

Joba Chamberlain isn’t wild about the innings limit on his right arm and how it has led to long stretches of inactivity in the second half. But he admits his arm is in very good shape.

“I feel great,” said Chamberlain, who starts tomorrow night against the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. “I feel a lot better at the beginning of the year. It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

Chamberlain last worked Aug. 16 at Seattle and will be going on eight days rest tomorrow. Chamberlain says he will get six more starts this year and if he averages the 5 2/3innings per start he has in 23 games so far that will get him to 160 2/3 innings for the season. That’s more than the 140-innings set in spring training but a total the Yankees wouldn’t be uncomfortable with.

If the Yankees truly cement their AL East lead as the regular season comes to a close, maybe Joba’s final few starts can be given to someone else so that the team can limit his innings total as much as possible, prior to the playoffs. Perhaps we’ll see Chad Gaudin or Anthony Claggett get a start in, instead. That would seem like a wise decision given that the Yankees face teams like Baltimore, Toronto, Seattle and Kansas City in September (they also face Tampa Bay and Boston). Joba’s cap is influenced by the way the team plays, though, down the stretch.

“maybe Joba’s final few starts can be given to someone else” NO NO NO NO NO! He needs to get 29 starts and no less! Joba needs to make all his starts that are left and learn how to finish a season strong as a starter and come into next year with no inning limit, giving his starts away will only frusterate him and make allow him to not be able to pitch in the post season… do you really want him starting a game in the play offs after 20 or so days off between his last start and his first post season start? Not smart!

I thought the Yankees could skip one of his starts, simply because he’ll be over 140 innings in his next 2 starts (that’s already pushing it a bit). I know the team is content with letting him go to 160, but then when you reach the playoffs, he could end up throwing 180 innings this year and that’s not necessarily safe.

Yeah but you saw how bad his control was after 10 days off, I really don’t want to throw him in a playoff game with even more than 10 days rest… Do you want that repeat performance against the Sox in the second round?

  2. The other Chris H says:

Well it’s getting closer to Joba’s first start in 10 days so lets see how he comes out, he should either be really strong and blowing guys away or if he hasn’t figured out the extra rest yet you could see a Joba who throws 92 and doesn’t get above it. I hope it’s the first and not the latter. Go Yankees! Go Joba!

  3. The other Chris H says:

His command wasn’t the greatest in that first inning but he hit 93 with Michael Young up and after that he went on to 95 and 96 against Hamilton so that is a really good sign that he might have figured out this extra rest when he is throwing hard early.

He has the heat going already hitting 96 a couple times and 95 two or three times and the slider looks good as well but the control isn’t great and that could be the only thing that could hamper this game as he has thrown 7 balls with 2 outs in the 2nd. You can not get two outs and then allow what just happen to happen! He walked the free swinging and K happy Chris Davis on 4 pitches and had to work from 3-0 on the rookie Elvis Andrus and paid for it with two runs, Joba’s control is not looking good and that is unfortunate because he has everything else tonight to dominate.

These walks are killing Joba, now I don’t necessarily think that one pitch was a ball to Pudge I thought he K’d him but no matter the situation you have to have a 1-2-3 inning somewhere and so far Joba is falling back into 20 pitch an inning Chamberlain.
Walks Pudge, gives up a hit to Davis and now gives up his 3rd RBI to Elvis Andrus looks like he is strong tonight but the rest is really showing up in the walks and balls department, this is really not the kind of start you were looking for Joba today.
This is the problem I have with Chamberlain getting this much time off between starts, his stuff was dominate today but he has absolutley no control and has given up the game, screwed his ERA over and won’t make it out of this inning.

This is the worst start I have ever seen Joba Chamberlain have with this kind of velocity and breaking ball, the slider wasn’t hanging until he got deep into that 4th inning and the fastball was pegging 94-96 consistently his lack of control was really a problem and if the Yankees keep resting him like this I really don’t expect much to change, although he is starting Sunday against the White Sox so maybe he can bounce back from it but it’s going to be a long week (5 days) in Joba land until then I’m sure the “Joba rules” will dominate the air waves!
