From ESPN:

Jeter passed Luis Aparicio for most hits by a shortstop on Sunday when he fought off a pitch on his hands from Seattle rookie Doug Fister and sent it down the right-field line for an RBI double in the third inning of New York’s 10-3 loss to the Mariners. His 2,674th hit as a shortstop came two innings after he had singled leading off the game.

I am quite surprised that the Yankees did not make a bigger deal of this as Jeter chased the record. It seems like it just came up a few games ago, and there was little fanfare from the front office when he passed Aparicio. Derek Jeter now has more hits than any SS in the long history in baseball, and this is the first step in what is sure to be a string of records and accolades notched by Derek as he heads into the twilight of his career.

In recent years, Jeter has actually become a bit underrated, with “fans” such as Mike Francesa calling him a borderline HOF’er if he did not have the championships. Records like this one will hopefully begin to educate the public about how good Derek has been. He is one of the top 10 SS of all time right now, and he does not seem to be close to done playing at a high level. He is one of the greatest to ever play his position, and is a surefire Hall of Famer.

Anyone notice Jeter doesn’t walk anymore? Last walk was a month ago.

    • Old Ranger says:

Yup, but, Jeter never did walk much.

    • The other Chris H says:

Don’t need to when you are hitting .318+ and getting on base with hits! Jeter is interesting leading off because he knows he is going to get a lot of fastballs, so instead of taking a bunch of pitches he just decides to hit the first fastball in the zone.

  2. Old Ranger says:

“surefire Hall of Famer.”…???? I’m not sure of that!
With his records and persona…it wouldn’t be so hard to project him as a HOF’er but, he is a hated Yankee.
I do think he is a HOF’er but, they put people into the HOF that should never have been given a vote and keep some that are much better out.
    Bottom line…yes, he will deserve it, I believe…but, I don’t vote.

Nah, Jeter is well respected as the face of the game, as a clean guy in a steroid era- he will make it easy.

    • Tom Hagen says:

Sure, anything can happen, but if Jeter keeps up his average stats for just two more years after this season, he’ll have over 3,000 hits and roughly 1800 runs scored. It’s a no-brainer. If he plays for more than that, even with his production slipping, as it must with age, he could probably end up in the top 10 all-time in both categories within 4 years (around 3300 hits and 1900 runs scored).
